Did you know that you and your family have the potential of contracting the same intestinal parasites that affect your pets?

Do you trust that the strangers you see with their pets at the park have their pets up to date on intestinal parasite prevention and have annual parasite screenings done?

Hookworms are an intestinal parasite the hook onto the animals intestines feeding on blood. This attachment can cause inflammation of the intestines causing bloody diarrhea, weight loss, and blood loss resulting in anemia. Transmission occurs from ingesting the hookworm larvae in f***s or the environment. This can even be from licking their paws which all of our animals do!

You may be thinking “my dog doesn’t interact with other dogs so they aren’t at risk right?” Well, they still are. Not only can hookworms live in the soil in the environment (we don’t need a dog present at the time your dog is for infection to occur) hookworm larvae can also be transmitted by ingestion of cockroaches.

Even if you have cats that are strictly indoor they are at risk as well.

So how do these parasites affect you and your family? If you and your kids walk around bare foot these worms can burrow into your skin. Yikes! These parasites are very hardy in the environment and can stick around for a long time.

So what should you do? First things first, bring us a stool sample! Let’s get your pets tested to be sure they aren’t dealing with an active infection. Then, let’s get them on monthly prevention to be sure these pesky parasites are not something you have to worry about on top of all of your other responsibilities.

Best of all, you don’t need an appointment to drop off a stool sample. As long as we have seen you pet within the last 12 months, we can get them tested without needing them in hospital.

Longer days, greener grass, and happy pets... it must be the first day of spring! But don’t forget. Pets can get seasonal allergies too. If your pet is extra itchy, it might be time to check in with the vet.
