☀️ Arizona Heat + Horses = Extra Hydration Needs! 🐴💧
Summer in Arizona can be tough on our equine friends. Here's how to help your horse stay cool and hydrated during extreme temps:

✅ Fresh Water 24/7 – Horses can drink 10–20+ gallons a day. Make sure troughs are clean and shaded.
✅ Add Electrolytes – Sweat = salt loss. Electrolytes (powder or paste) help keep your horse drinking and balanced.
✅ Soak Their Hay or Feed – Adding water to pellets or hay cubes is an easy hydration boost.
✅ Check Skin Pinch Test – A slow snap-back means your horse might be dehydrated.
✅ Offer Water Often When Hauling – Don’t assume they’ll drink later.

🔥 If your horse is lethargic, dry-gummed, or not sweating normally—call us ASAP. Heat stress can escalate quickly.

🧊 Tip: Freeze large blocks of ice to drop into water tubs during peak heat!

Have questions about heat safety or electrolytes? Drop them below—we’re here to help!

This horse definitely did not like this ear tick in his ear! We had to sedate him and go deep into the ear to get this out. We ended with a much happier horse and one less tick in the world!

Don't forget fall vaccines and exams! Fall vaccines protect against common respiratory diseases and will catch problems and set your horse up for winter while "annual" vaccines leave horses partially unprotected for 6 months!

3 things to do before it gets any hotter!
1. Do get your horse vaccinated against mosquito borne diseases (WNV etc.)
2. Do make sure your horse has access to shade and fresh water (I know they never stand under it and constantly make a mess of the water by dunking their hay, do it anyway!)
3. Do continually check your horse’s eyes – no leaving the fly mask on for the whole summer, no matter what your horse tells you! (Come to think of it – do they make fly masks for humans???)
3 things to not do before it gets any hotter!
1. Do not pull your horse’s shoes for the summer! (High risk for laminitis, foot abscesses!)
2. Do not feed your horse extra trying to make up for not spending as much time with them. (High risk for laminitis, colic, insulin resistance, not looking good in their swimsuit!)
3. Do not forget to get on a few more rides, especially in the mornings and evenings! (High risk for fun with your horse!)

Rain and mud come and go but hoof care is forever!
Take time today, and everyday, to pick out your horse's hooves, especially when the ground is muddy! We see abscesses and other foot problems frequently when feet aren't cleaned out regularly.
