Foxtails are small barbed grass awns that can lead to big problems. These barbed grass awns can become lodged in your pets paws, ears, nose, eyes, or skin and can move deeper into the body.
After walks, hikes, or time in any dry grassy area, take some time to check your pet closely.
If you notice any symptoms that come on suddenly or worsen quickly, it may be time for emergency care!

Meet Treble Pearson 🐾

Treble, a 10-year-old Rat Terrier mix, underwent a splenectomy with Dr.Bates at ARISE in October 2025 after a splenic mass was discovered incidentally on abdominal ultrasound. Thankfully, the mass was benign, and Treble is now doing great!

Pictured with Treble is his owner, Dr.Pearson ❤️

“His recovery was incredibly smooth. He loved his time with the wonderful surgery and ER nurses at ARISE and would recommend their skills 10/10.”

We’re so grateful to our sister hospital, ARISE, for providing exceptional care and helping Treble get back to feeling his best.

Thank you Dr.Pearson for sharing Treble's story!

Congratulations to Shavonne (“Pige”) for being selected as the Lightning Learner Superhero of the Month! Pige is a Veterinary Technician Assistant who is always eager to learn and grow. Although this is her first role in the veterinary field, she has already made a wonderful impact during her 5+ months at AVECCC.

Pige shared, “I learn something new every day! The team here is truly amazing, and their skills and kindness are top-notch. Everyone is so willing to teach and help others grow. I’m so thankful for them!”

Outside of work, Pige enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters. Between work and school, family time is especially important to her. Their household also includes two black Goldendoodles, Titan and Lady, along with three pet rats named Togepi, Silky, and Oreo. We appreciate Pige and her happy, helpful personality as she helps our clients and patients. 🤩 ❤️

Temps are rising in Arizona! Hot cars and rising temperatures can become dangerous for pets in minutes.
As we slowly creep into the triple digits, taking a few extra precautions can make all the difference in helping prevent a heat-related emergency.
Watch for signs of heat stroke in your pet, including excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, lethargy, unsteady movement, bright red or pale gums, and collapse. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately.
Stay mindful, prepared, and hydrated. Help keep your pets safe this summer.

On Endangered Species Day, we’re reminded that conservation is often thought of in terms of distant habitats and rare wildlife.

But in emergency veterinary medicine, what we see reflects the world around us.

We may only treat dogs and cats, but their health is shaped by the same environment we all share. The toxins in our homes and yards, the way we manage waste, the choices we make about products and prevention don’t stay contained to our households.

What we wish people knew is this:
We can treat the emergency in front of us, but prevention always starts outside the hospital.

A healthier environment for pets is part of a healthier world for everything living in it.
