Babies are 4 weeks old! Time flies when you’re having fun and these babies have been a blast!

Here are this week’s accomplishments:
- First time outside
- Nails were done for the third time (they hated it)
- Got bigger digs, started crate introduction
- We’re pooping in the potty box (and peeing in it… sometimes)
- We started turkey (second protein) and egg (third protein)
- We had visitors!
- Some have names!

So pleased to announce that on September 23rd, God blessed us with seven gorgeous babies!

The girls:
1 flashy brindle
1 white with a fawn patch

The boys:
1 flashy brindle
1 plain brindle
2 white, one with a fawn patch and one with brindle patches

We thought she was done… She had stopped panting and was resting comfortably. I stepped out to use the restroom only to return to one more beautiful semi-flashy fawn boy.

His markings are identical to our Max son Canon who was taken from us far too soon in a horrible accident. Hi buddy, we see you and have missed you horribly. 💙

So our final count is 7.

Thank you so much, Gayann and Cheri for letting us bring Gypsy to your gorgeous boy.

Pre-made Raw… Does brand matter?

No matter which brand you decide to feed, most brands of pre-made raw are better than feeding kibble.

But did you know that some brands are more processed than others? As with human foods, nutritional value is eroded with any form of processing.

Most manufacturers claim necessity for food safety reasons, but in following proper food safety guidelines, these measures should be unnecessary.

Although the primary base for our raw diet consists of whole chicken backs, we do supplement ground premade raw for novel proteins as the easiest and most economical way to include larger animal protein, offal and bone into our diets.

Below we see examples from two different brands that we have fed at some point during our 25 years of feeding raw. On the left, a product that we no longer feed. The right is what we feed currently—The Butcher’s Hound Lamb & Duck Blend.

The difference between the two is visually obvious… but how? And why do they look so different?

It all comes down to processing, and the driving reason behind our choice to prefer the Butcher’s Hound for our pack today.

Butcher’s Hound does not use…

1: Mechanical separation: Mechanically separated meat (MSM) is a product created by extracting meat from bones using mechanical processes. This method is commonly used for poultry and certain types of pork. The resulting product is a paste-like substance that contains both meat and non-meat tissues.

This process is the one used for many fast food chicken nuggets—yes, including that one. Ba-da-ba-ba-ba!

2: High Pressure Processing (HPP) is a method used in dog food production that applies extremely high pressure to eliminate harmful bacteria without using heat, preserving the food's nutritional value and taste. This process helps ensure the safety of raw dog food by reducing the risk of pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli.

And while they state that HPP preserves the nutritional value (debatable, because we know certain nutrients can become unstable in certain conditions), as with killing of bad bacteria, so goes the good, which are the foundation for a healthy gut biome.

At Firebrand, we prefer to feed as whole as possible. And once I saw the whole chunks of offal and fat and muscle meat in The Butcher’s Hound’s products, the choice was made simple.

This is not a sales pitch—we receive no compensation for making this post. We just like to share products we love! Here are a few more:

What is “COI” and how is it a useful tool in breeding purebred dogs?

COI or “coefficient of inbreeding” is a term used to describe the deleterious effects that inbreeding too heavily can have on not just one dog, but an entire family of dog’s overall health, including epigenetic health.

When I first started in Boxers in the early 2000s, it was very common for the “old timer” breeders to linebreed and even inbreed heavily, and then pull in bi***es from backyard bred pet stock as brood bi***es to help maintain the genetic health of their lines.

With the advent of health testing, social media and the push of the animal rights movement, these practices feel out of fashion. It was too difficult for a breeder to ensure cleanliness of health testing for dogs of an unknown pedigree—while the brood bitch tested may have been clear for a given disease, all dogs behind her were untested and unknown. And so, this practice fell out of favor and our genetic diversity grew smaller and smaller.

Around 2010, we began to see the effects of this. High incidence of immune dysfunction (the term “boxer colitis” had even been coined by vets due to immune dysregulation of the digestive system), cancers boomed, breeders couldn’t—for the life of them—get their bi***es to conceive whether breeding them naturally or via AI with tons of science and progesterone testing, and litter sizes of 5 or fewer puppies were considered normal. Newborn mortality was also high—puppies were born weak and failure to thrive was common. Other defects like cleft palettes and midline defects more common.

Breeders began to wake up. And while we refused to let go of the useful tools of health testing, we found alternative ways to diversify by using technology to analyze our pedigrees and planned breedings for lower rates of COI. Breeders began importing dogs from overseas. They began breeding based on penotype vs. genotype. And outcrossing became more common.

In 2015, I purchased a half German bitch from a dear friend of mine. Her name is Luna and she can be seen in my albums. Luna is the foundation for all of the dogs in my program.

I’m pleased to say that I’ve enjoyed the rewards of the low COI her pedigree has had to offer to my program and family of dogs.

My observations:

- Low/no allergies
- Predictable seasons
- Very high fertility rates
- No missed breedings
- First litter 10 puppies
- Second litter 9 puppies
- All puppies robust, fat and healthy, and came kicking and screaming into this world
- Fabulous early cognitive development—walking, ears, eyes open early
- No midline or other defects
- No mono/cryptorchidism
- No “boxer colitis”

These things seem to be holding true with her daughters as well.

Pure bred does not equal well bred. Of these two heads, one is very correct, the other is not.

Sometimes the difference is easy to see. Other times, the difference is hidden via health or temperament issues.

The best way to avoid all of it? Choose a breeder who…

- Leverages our breed’s standard to improve structure with each generation and competes in AKC’s conformation show ring to ensure they are objectively evaluated.
- Health tests their breeding stock for common conditions in our breed and carefully monitors the longevity reached with each generation of their lines
- Supports overall and general health, including epigenetic health via careful animal husbandry and breeding practices
- Temperament tests all puppies produced by a tested, tried and true testing platform prior to placement in their new homes
- Places puppies according to the jobs they’re best suited and follows through with support and training recommendations through it all

Many question the expense in purchasing a well bred dog. But in the context of the value provided above, this 10-12 year investment is priceless.

Diet is the cornerstone of health. For over 25 years, our kids have eaten a species appropriate raw diet (frankenprey).

This is an example of a morning breakfast here at Firebrand. Supper typically contains more bone via whole chicken backs.

These beautiful bowls contain:
🦃 Ground turkey
🐮 Ground organ mix (beef)
🎣 Canned mackerel
🥚 Raw egg
🥬 Raw fermented sauerkraut (the only fruits and veggies we feed are the fermented kinds)
🥛 Homemade probiotic yogurt
🍍 Home fermented pineapple cider vinegar
🦐 Krill oil
🐄 Bovine colostrum
🫚 Turmeric
🍊 Quercetin
🍄 Medicinal mushrooms

Ingredients whole enough to each have their own emojis! 😂

Feeding this way has eliminated:
- Cloudy eyes
- Digestive upset
- Large, stinky, gross stools
- Waxy flaky coats
- Stinky feet
- Excessive thirst
- General itchiness
- Excessive weight and lack of muscle tone
- Bad breath
- Continuous trips to the vet for small issues

You don’t realize these things until they’re eliminated. Most people accept it as a normal part of pet ownership. They’re not.

As a breeder, breeding correctly is expensive enough. I prefer to give my kids the best foundation and reserve my money for shows and those treasured breedings rather than needless routine trips to the vet!

Each Firebrand Boxer comes with dietary support and consultation built in—for life! We support our families no matter what. ❤️f
