When you fumble a jar or struggle with a latch, she notices. She decides who looks capable and who doesn’t. And yes, it can change who she chooses to go to.

Researchers tested dogs with two people - one clearly competent at opening a container and one who pretended to fail. The females paid closer attention. When there was actually food inside, most of the females went to the person who could get the job done. The males didn’t show the same strong pattern.

Here’s the sweet part. It isn’t about being perfect. It’s about trust. Female dogs seem to care whether the human near them can help when it matters. That feeling you get when she studies your face for a beat longer than usual - that’s her deciding if you’re the one to follow right now.

When the container was empty, the dogs didn’t care who was competent. That means it’s not just a bias. It’s a smart choice when something real is at stake.

If you live with a girl dog, you might already know this. She watches you fix the squeaky hinge. She tracks whether you follow through. She leans into the person who calmly solves problems. It’s not judgment to be mean. It’s judgment to feel safe.

So don’t take it personally. Take it as a nudge. Be steady. Be useful. Show her you can help when it counts. She’ll see it. She always does.
