“Kennel Cough” update. Boy or boy are we frustrated with this respiratory stuff. Two and a half weeks ago we shut down for two days and did an extreme deep clean and airing out of the building. We were one day shy of no cases reported then halfway through a dogs stay he started coughing 😞

We are having such a hard time staying on top of this for a few reasons.

1. Dogs can come in and not have symptoms for up to 5 days while they are carrying it then be symptomatic

2. The kennel cough vaccine isn’t working at all. We make sure all dogs have their vaccines clearly it’s not making a difference.

3. No one shares water or toys but this is airborne so it’s almost impossible to prevent any spread

4. I have a suspicion this isn’t normal kennel cough. I keep calling local vets for answers. How do dogs keep getting this if they’re vaccinated against it? How is it that these dogs are repeatedly getting it not like normal kennel cough? And is there anything else we can be doing? (We are told there is not)

So I want to remind you again. If you are planing to board please make sure your dog hasn’t had any cough for two weeks prior to boarding. Also please limit dog parks and
socializing if you know you will be boarding to reduce the risk of your dog coming in carrying the virus.

If you are wanting daycare your dog and its housemates must be two weeks clear of coughing.

Please know the vaccinations isn’t enough. It just isn’t working in my opinion. If your dogs cough or sickness seems to be lasting longer than a normal bout of kennel cough please take your dog to a vet and get antibiotics. I’ve been in this business a long time but I haven’t seen cases repeated or this long lasting like we are seeing this year.

We are continuing to deep clean. Constantly changing towels in crates. Spraying with Lysol. Private water bowls and no shared toys but all of our efforts seem to be just not enough with this thing. But I promise we are doing everything we can.

♦️♦️♦️Hello all our lovely customers. Warmer weather has arrived and with always comes an influx of kennel cough. We have seen a very high number of cases lately. We did shut down almost completely these last two days for an extreme deep clean and air out of our facility. We know it’s highly inconvenient to have to cancel plans or not have your dog getting the daycare fun they love but we greatly wish to not contribute to the spread of this ick that’s going around.

I have consulted with a few local vets and we have been told dogs should not socialize until a full week after the last cough. Not after antibiotics but the last cough. We are turning away dogs for boarding, daycare and grooming if they are coughing upon entry. This is hard because often dogs can be carriers up to two weeks before we see any symptoms and this is airborne. So even though we are taking precautions such as no shared water or toys there is only so much we can prevent with it being a social atmosphere.

We are asking your help to please keep your pets at home if you hear any coughing from your dog. Please help us stop the spread of this infection as much as possible. And please be understanding if your pet needs to be turned away. No one like having to turn someone away but at this time we feel it’s the most responsible action we can take.
