Does your dog lose it when guests walk in? 🐾

Try this:
1. Keep greetings boring until all four paws are on the floor.
2. Reward the sit, not the jump — attention comes when they're calm.
3. Use the place command — send your dog to place when someone comes in, so they have a job to do instead of rushing the door.
4. Keep treats near the door and scatter them on the floor when guests arrive, so your dog gets rewarded more for being on the floor than for jumping up.
5. Practice this when you're by yourself first — have a housemate go outside, knock on the door, and walk in, and run that routine until it's boring, before you try it with exciting guests.

Happy Halloween! 🎃🐾

Tonight is the ultimate doorbell test. Costumes, excited kids, a knock every few minutes — for a lot of dogs, that's a recipe for barking, jumping, and bolting for the door.

Here's how to set your dog up for a calm Halloween night:

1️⃣ Give them a job before the first knock. Send them to "place" with a chew or a stuffed Kong, away from the front door if you can.
2️⃣ Practice the sound. Ring the doorbell yourself a few times today, then reward calm. Boring doorbell = boring reaction.
3️⃣ Don't let them rehearse the chaos. If your dog loses it every time the door opens, keep them behind a baby gate or in another room tonight — management isn't cheating, it's smart.
4️⃣ Keep candy out of reach. Chocolate and xylitol are dangerous for dogs, and wrappers are no treat either.
5️⃣ Tire them out first. A good walk or training session this afternoon makes a calmer dog tonight.
6️⃣ For the really anxious dogs, skip the door altogether tonight. Leave a bowl of candy outside and just practice around the sounds from a safe distance, instead of having kids actually knocking — that's still training, and it's a lot kinder than a night of panic at the door.

This video is excellent! It’s one of the hardest things to explain to owners because for human behavior, it just doesn’t make sense.

If you have a pup who can be apprehensive about people (or dogs) when interacting, this is a great listen. Sometimes what we believe is a dog being friendly can be a dog who’s scared, stressed or even testing the boundaries.

Last month, we lost one of our own. Our beloved Hex was suddenly diagnosed with cancer and, far sooner than we ever expected, he went to the Rainbow Bridge to wait for us.

If you’ve ever brought a reactive dog or even a puppy through our training program, there’s a very good chance they spent some time around Hex. He was a steady, confident dog who gave other dogs the opportunity to learn how to regulate themselves, settle, and exist around a dog who wasn’t going to react to their every reaction. He played a quiet but very important role in the lives of so many of the dogs who came through our doors.

We miss him very much. There is a noticeable hole here without him, and I don't think that's something that will ever completely go away.

His passing has been another reminder that no day is promised. So take the walk. Give them that extra treat. Let them lay beside you a little longer. Take the picture. And love them hard.

Because one day, all we'll have left are the memories of the ordinary moments we didn't realize were so important. Please enjoy the photos below, there were too many to choose from so if you spot your pup, leave a comment!

A little exciting news to share with you all!

As many of you know, dog training is so much more to me than just a job. Along with helping families build better relationships with their dogs, I also compete in dog sports at a high level. This year, I’m honored to be heading to the Netherlands as part of Team USA for our German Shepherd Dog working world championship.

It’s a world-level championship for German Shepherd dogs for tracking, obedience and protection. Qualifying to compete is a huge accomplishment.

I wanted to share this not just as a personal milestone, but as a reminder that when you work with Wags & Wisdom, you’re working with a trainer who is deeply committed to learning, growing, and performing at the highest level possible — and bringing that experience back to help your pets and you; the owners.

Client Spotlight: Meet Annie 🐾

Annie is a sweet Great Pyrenees mix who came to stay with us for our 3-week Wild to Well Behaved Program shortly after being adopted by her family. 💛

While Annie was an easygoing girl, her owners wanted to build a stronger foundation of manners, obedience, and reliability as she settled into her new home. One of their biggest goals was improving her recall, as Annie had a tendency to run and they wanted to be sure she could safely enjoy more freedom.

During her 3 weeks with us, Annie worked hard on basic obedience, better engagement, and building a more reliable recall, all while learning the structure and clarity needed to thrive with her new family.

Now Annie’s family has more confidence in her listening skills, a stronger foundation to continue building on, and greater peace of mind knowing she is more responsive and reliable.
