"Because you can’t, it doesn’t mean the horse can’t: a talk about accepting responsibility for what You do not know"

I see this often. I know most quality training barns out there do, as well.

When you come into my barn to look at a horse I have for sale or a horse you trusted me with training I promise you this horse knows how to load, pick up all 4 feet, accepts fly spray, respects personal space, stands to be mounted. . . You name it, the horse does it, or maybe he does most of it, and then he goes home or a buyer will take them home and they know a lot less than a trainer or you would have never trusted me with your horse to begin with……… but needless to say things unravel.

You get a call or email in 3 weeks or 3 months, and it goes like this:

“Nelly won’t load. No one can load her. I doubt you even ever loaded her.”

You suggest they remember the day Nelly loaded from the facility like a gem, but they do not see how that matters. They insist the horse cannot be loaded now, and therefore, no one can load her, and the horse is the problem.

Let us try another scenario:

“Fluffles runs me over every single time I open the stall, she won’t stand to be mounted, and she bucks the minute I try to get on.”

You suggest they remember the day they came to meet Fluffles, and you remind them how you went to the stall, took her out, how she stayed out of their space, how you put tack on her, how she stood like a gem, how they then mounted and rode her off nicely. They insist it was a fluke. It isn’t the horse they have now. They end up never asking for lessons to fill the deficit in knowledge they, not the horse, have in their skillset.

This is how good trainers get a bad reputation, this is how good horses end up neglected and discarded, and this is how a novice (even if long time) horse owner never really takes responsibility for what they do not know and need to learn.

If someone else accomplished something with a horse, the HORSE KNOWS. If you cannot recreate the same things with your horse, then you do not know, and as a result, you can undo a good horse quickly with ignorance and with mistakes, both large and small.

I’ve seen so many horses that get the short end of the stick because the owners DID not know enough to keep the horses in order. I’ve seen it hundreds of times.

Horses get labels that are unfair because of this.

I get horses all the time that are called dangerous…..all of the time….. and they never show me a dangerous side, and it is important to understand a HORSE KNOWS what you know and what you do not. So sometimes, months of training isn’t even needed to fix behaviors; sometimes, the horse simply realizes he is being handled fairly and correctly, and he responds in the way he learned to respond years ago – as a partner. And the truth is, forcing a horse to endure ignorant treatment without responding isn’t realistic or kind, either.

Please never make the mistake of limiting the horse to WHAT YOU know. He usually knows more than you.

So if you saw a trainer ride the horse W/T/C without an issue, load the horse, back the horse, pick up all 4 feet, receive respect on the ground or whatever else you’re not seeing now, then be fair to the horse, and spend your time assuming the shortcomings belong to you, not him.

Owning cattle🐮🐄 vs owning horses🐴🐎

Starting to question whether I’ve been under the influence of a hallucinogenic drug most of my life. Some early observations on the differences:

🐎 Put one mare out with one stallion, all hell breaks loose. Mare threatens to come through the fence or over the gate, all at 400 mph. My heart rate peaks at 1257 bpm and I have no fingernails left. After what feels like an eternity, they calm down. Mare lame. Multi million dollar vet bill pending.

🐄 Put one bull out with 18 cows. Complete non event. Absolutely nothing to report.

🐎Remove one horse from ‘friend’ that it has always hated. Absolute pandemonium ensues. Life flashes before my eyes and I remember I must renew the life insurance if I survive this.

🐄Remove one cow from entire herd. Comes quietly for handful of corn.

🐎Horses breakout of field. Horses have complete meltdown at lack of boundaries. No amount of ‘whoaing’ or bucket shaking will calm them. After many laps of the farm they forget why they are running. Two are lame, one is tying up, one suspected soft tissue injury and one half hearted attempt at a colic. Further multi million dollar vet bill pending.

🐄Cattle break out of field. Ringleader is wearing the 7 bar gate as a necklace. All cows congregate approximately 2 ft from field at nearest grass verge. Remove necklace from ringleader. Not a mark to be seen. Wave magic blue wand. All cows returned to field.

🐎Comes in from field with 1cm scratch that has barely removed hair. Immediately clean, apply bandage, check available balance on credit card. Next morning horse can only stand on 3 legs. Call vet and priest. After all, horse will require many millions in vets bills and divine intervention to recover from its scratch.

🐄Comes in missing a leg with rusted barbed wire embedded in the wound. Call vet who says there’s no need for him to come out and will put up antibiotics for you to collect. Return to administer antibiotics to find cow has miraculously regrown leg and shows no sign injury or lameness. Stash antibiotics in medicine cupboard with the rest of the hoard.

🚨 IF I EVER GET PULLED OVER, I’M PROBABLY GOING TO JAIL 🚨

Not because I’ve done anything illegal…

But because the inside of a horse person’s truck looks like a rolling crime scene. 😂

Officer, I can explain.

That wasn’t ma*****na.

It was alfalfa.

That syringe had Banamine in it.

Those needles were not for me.

The baggie of white powder is electrolytes.

The unlabeled pills are SMZs.

The blood on those towels is also from a horse.

The giant bottle of lubricant is veterinary.

The shoulder-length gloves are completely normal.

The ropes, chains, zip ties, headlamp, tarp, shovel, and knife are all ranch-related.

And before you ask…

Yes, there may be a f***l sample in that Tupperware.

No, you do not want to open it.

At this point, forensics is getting called, my truck is being impounded, and I’m sitting in the back of a patrol car trying to convince everyone that the suspicious bottle with “PAIN MEDS” written on it is just Banamine whose original label wore off.

Eventually, they’ll release me.

Horse people don’t carry paraphernalia.

We carry an entire mobile veterinary clinic held together with baling twine, hay wire, and poor decisions. 😂

What’s the most suspicious-looking thing currently riding around in your truck that has a perfectly reasonable horse-person explanation? 😂

There not much money in horse training so I’m gonna go the uber route…. Anyone need a ride?
