Big thanks to Sarver Farms for hosting a Breeding Soundness haul-in day—where bulls prove they’re more than just good looking. These producers know the value of making sure every bull is ready to punch the clock. A great day of cattlemen coming together to get the job done.

Post-calving represents the greatest nutritional demand for a beef cow.

During this period she must lactate, repair her reproductive tract, resume heat cycles, breed and, if she is a young cow, she must continue to grow and develop. She requires a high energy and protein diet of at least 62% total digestible nutrients and 11% crude protein. If her requirements are not met, she will lose body condition and may not rebreed.

🐂 Spring Bull Turnout Is Coming — Is Your Bull Ready?

A Breeding Soundness Exam (BSE) is one of the most valuable tools you can use to protect your calf crop and avoid costly surprises when bulls hit the pasture.

At Boyd Veterinary Services, we offer complete bovine breeding soundness exams to evaluate whether your bull is capable of getting cows bred efficiently.

🔎 What We Evaluate During a BSE:
• Semen quality and motility
• S***m morphology (structure)
• Scrotal circumference
• Physical soundness and mobility
• Reproductive anatomy

👍 Why a Breeding Soundness Exam Is Important:
• Identifies infertile or subfertile bulls before turnout
• Helps maximize pregnancy rates in your herd
• Prevents lost time during a short breeding window
• Protects your investment in herd genetics
• Gives you confidence heading into bull turnout

💡 The Bottom Line:
Testing bulls 30–60 days before turnout allows time to replace any bulls that do not pass and keeps your breeding program on track.

📍 Boyd Veterinary Services offers on-farm exams when safe working facilities are available, and haul-in options are also available.

📞 Call Boyd Veterinary Services today to schedule your bull breeding soundness exams and make sure your bulls are ready to go to work.

🚨 Attention Beef Producers 🚨

If your cattle look a little off after these weather swings, you’re not imagining it.

This back-and-forth spring weather—warm days followed by cold nights with wind, rain, and mud—creates the perfect conditions for various diseas and scours in beef cattle.

Rapid weather changes stress the immune system, increase energy demands, and allow respiratory pathogens to move through a herd much easier.

🚨Keep a close eye on your cattle for:
• Coughing
• Nasal discharge
• Fever
• Fast or labored breathing
• Droopy ears or lethargy
• Calves lagging behind the herd

⚠️ High-risk groups:
Calves, thin cows, and recently transported or commingled cattle.

✅ What you can do right now:
• Provide wind protection and dry areas
• Make sure cattle are maintaining good nutrition
• Watch calves closely after cold rain or major temperature drops
• Catch and treat sick cattle early

Spring weather can change fast—and so can respiratory disease outbreaks.

👀 Now is the time to be checking cattle daily.

📞 If you see problems in your herd, call Boyd Veterinary Services. Early intervention can save calves and prevent bigger herd health issues.

Getting heifers bred quickly after the voluntary waiting period keeps your herd on schedule and your operation moving forward. Earlier pregnancies lead to improved efficiency and a quicker ROI.

ESTROTECT™ Breeding Indicators support that timing by making estrus signals clear and high estrus intensity easy to identify.

🚨 Cattle Owner Reminder 🚨

If you’re going to own cattle, you must have a safe and reliable way to catch and restrain them. This could be:
✔️ A proper handling facility (chute, headgate, alley)
✔️ A loading setup to take them to a clinic or another facility

Cattle aren’t pets! They’re large, powerful animals, and when it comes to health checks, vaccinations, or emergencies, being able to safely handle them isn’t optional. It protects:
🐄 The cattle (less stress, proper care)
👩‍⚕️ The people working with them (vet, owner, family)
🌱 The operation (efficiency, safety, peace of mind)

👉 Bottom line: If you don’t have the facilities, make sure you have a plan to transport your animals to someone who does. Good animal care starts with good animal handling.
