Unlike humans, horses don’t have collarbones. Their shoulders are held to the rest of their skeleton via a sling of muscles and ligaments instead, often referred to as the “thoracic sling.”

Why is this important? We often ask our equine athletes to perform complex movements that require tremendous strength and coordination, and horses carry the majority of their weight in their front end. Therefore, it is imperative that the bulk of the muscles that support the front end are kept healthy and conditioned, and the horse is trained to use their “motor” — that is, engaging the large hind end muscles as much as possible to avoid excessive weight bearing on the front end.

If the front end of the horse is consistently overweighted or not at an appropriate level of fitness, repetitive biomechanical stresses get transferred down the leg to the smaller ligaments and tendons that were not designed to bear this weight, which can then lead to injury.

🐴DRESSAGE SOLUTIONS🐴 Understand How Crooked Riding Affects Your Horse ...

Load a wheelbarrow heavily to one side as in the center illustration. Now push the wheelbarrow, and feel how it pulls to the weighted side and how you are forced to lean in that direction to compensate. That’s how your horse feels when you sit unevenly in the saddle, as shown in the left image. When you sit evenly, the horse will be centered and balanced as shown in the illustration on the right.

🐴DRESSAGE SOLUTIONS🐴 To improve your horse’s suppleness and agility on bending lines …

Imagine the curve of your horse’s spine bending similarly to the way a whip flexes (poll to tail). Pay close attention to the turn of the horse’s head (or flexion at the poll) as that helps curve the neck correctly. Moving your horse laterally sideways on circles and in corners makes going straight more fluid and forward.

designed for contemporary riders.

Candymaker is a truly stunning horse who oozes class and quality. He is fresh off the track, no injuries, vices, health concerns. He is an incredibly sweet, snuggly ,"in your pocket" type. He has been extremely polite and quiet for daily barn handling and turning out. We have not sat on him yet but he promised to be something incredibly special.

Mid 4 🥕 if someone snatches him up before we get him going in the next couple of weeks.

This beautiful boy (Twirling Candy x Giant's Causeway) just arrived at the farm from the track to learn about being a riding horse. He is super sweet and kind. Can't wait to sit on him and see what he wants his new job to be!
