To prevent resource guarding of food between dogs and humans, it's crucial to adopt a thoughtful approach. Many people wrongly disrupt their dog's meals and take their food away in an effort to ward off resource guarding. They may inadvertently create resource guarding behaviors by doing this. To foster a positive relationship with food sharing, position yourself as the giver of food. Offer your dog an initial portion of their ration and then supplement it while they're eating. Have children add a desirable treat to their bowl, ensuring their approach is always met with enthusiasm. If your dog already displays resource guarding behaviors, please don't hesitate to seek professional help. We're here to support you.

In households with multiple dogs, it is not unusual for one dog to display jealousy when you are petting another dog, resulting in the dog blocking the attention. This behavior is, in fact, a form of resource guarding, with you as the valued resource. While some dogs may not escalate this behavior, others may progress to aggressive guarding. To address this behavior, it is vital to be aware of its occurrence and avoid rewarding it with affection, as this can lead to further escalation. Instead, establish a system where the dog must wait its turn and correct them for blocking the other dog.

When addressing resource guarding, it is crucial to adopt an approach that does not involve removing a puppy's food. Some videos have demonstrated people taking away their puppy's food and playing with it to desensitize them to others interfering with their meals. However, this method can inadvertently create resource guarding behaviors that were not previously present. If our intention is to prevent food guarding, our strategy should be the opposite of taking their food away. When approaching their bowl, it should only be to add something desirable. This will encourage them to welcome our approach. Then, if it becomes necessary to take their bowl, for instance, if you forgot to add a topper, they will be more accepting because you consistently add to their food. Essentially, do not remove their food to teach them not to guard it. Puppies will tolerate it very well, but as soon as they reach maturity they will start making their protest known. Puppies from large litters may arrive already predisposed to resource guarding. This often occurs when breeders do not provide enough food, resulting in some puppies still being hungry after the food is gone. By understanding the causes of resource guarding, we can implement strategies to prevent it. If you require guidance on correcting resource guarding that has already developed, please do not hesitate to contact me.

This often occurs when breeders do not provide enough food, resulting in some puppies remaining hungry after the food is gone. These puppies may not exhibit resource guarding behaviors until they gain confidence between 14-16 weeks old. However, it is possible that human error contributes to the development of this behavior at a later stage. By understanding the causes of resource guarding, we can implement strategies to prevent it. How to teach your dog their name.

Play the "Name game!"
(Their name only means to look at you, it is not a command to recall.)
In a small confined area, say their name and immediately give a small high value treat like a piece of hot dog. Continue to treat immediately after saying their name until they look at your hand for the treat when you say their name. When they begin to look at your hand for the treat, hold it at your forhead. Say their name, praise them for looking at you and give the treat.

Socialization
Did you know that proper socialization doesn't look very social? If you want your dog to be confident around other people and dogs do not allow on leash greetings, even if you have to physically block the other people and dogs. Only a few things can happen during an on leash dog greeting and most of them are negative. They decide to play and then aren't allowed to and get frustrated, or they express fear or agression and want to act out. Go where the dogs are, but your dog should know that you aren't going to let just anyone into their bubble. Soon your dog will not be nervous or excited about the other dogs they see and won't worry about one coming into their space. It establishes the norm of not leaving their handler's side. If a dog does come into their space they will handle it better because for the most part all of the dogs they've ever met (at distance) posed no threats.

If unfamiliar dogs must be introduced, take them for a walk together and move closer as it feels safe and appropriate.

Some dogs are reactive to people and get overly excited and pull trying to get closer for a pet. Only allow someone to pet your pup that you'd allow to hug your kid. Ask your pup to hold a sit and then the person may come to them for the pet, but do not allow your pup to leave you to go to another person for the pet. Otherwise they'll remember that one time back in 1989 they pulled and you let them go get pets. If your dog is timid it is equally important to expose them to lots of people, but be very selective of who you let pet them. Letting strangers pet your puppy will make their anxiety toward people worse. They will actually develop more confidence around people if you make them be where the people are but do not allow pets.

If they are timid in the home of people in general, keep them on leash and where they cannot practice hiding from the family. Make them be with you, but don't force them to be pet. They will want it all on their own very soon. Following these practices sets a great foundation for having a dog that is balanced and predictable when on leash in public.

Important information for all doodle coat owners: if you part your dog's hair and do not clearly see skin, it indicates matting, which may require your groomer to shave them short. Dematting can be painful for dogs and is a time-consuming process. Therefore, when brushing your dog, it is essential to part their hair and brush from the skin out. If you are unable to commit to regular brushing, a shorter style achieved with a kennel clip may be a more suitable option.
