MYTH: Lack of topline means lack of protein.

FACT: People often believe that increasing protein in a horse’s diet will improve topline, but this is not a correct assumption. Crude protein is simply a mathematical equation (nitrogen multiplied by 6.25), and this really doesn’t tell us much when it comes to protein quality for a horse. Protein quality is reflected by the amino acid profile in the diet.

Amino acids such as lysine, threonine, and methionine are important players when it comes to building strong muscle and developing a good top line—and it is possible to have a high crude protein diet yet still lack the important amino acids needed to maintain, repair and build muscle. A balanced amino acid supplement can be helpful in these situations.
