The first AND last time I bring the feed wagon into the horse pen. 🤦♀️🐴 Holly thinks feeding time should be a self-serve buffet!
With our pasture grasses drying up and losing nutritional value, we’re transitioning our horses over to their winter feeding routine.
For my own horses, I feed Bluebonnet Intensify Omega Force & Gut Reset powder, measuring each horse’s daily ration BY WEIGHT NOT SCOOPS, according to their body weight, workload, and the manufacturer’s feeding recommendations.
For forage, we’re currently feeding a combination of Montana Premium Forage alfalfa cubes and compressed alfalfa bales while we transition to round bales for winter.
🌾 DID YOU KNOW?
Most horses should consume approximately 1.5-2% of their body weight in forage dry matter daily, with some needing more depending on their individual requirements.
That means a 1,000 lb horse typically needs approximately 15-20 lb of forage dry matter per day! Actual hay weight will be slightly higher because hay contains moisture.
As our pasture grasses go dormant, it’s important to make sure our horses are still receiving adequate forage rather than relying on what little grazing remains.
One of my goals has been simplifying our feeding routine so it’s easy for my family to help with chores when I’m away. Having a consistent feeding program, weighing our feed, and using convenient forage products makes that much easier!
We carry these feeds at Diamond Double O Feed Co. They’re great options for supplementing hay, managing forage portions, or making feeding more convenient.
🐴 And apparently, Holly gives them her stamp of approval!
