Happy Birthday, Dr. Pitts!
🎉 Today, we’re celebrating one of our own — Dr. Justin Pitts!

Known for his calm confidence, surgical precision, and unwavering dedication to our patients, Dr. Pitts is the kind of veterinarian every pet (and pet parent) hopes to have in their corner.

Whether he’s in the middle of a complex case or offering guidance to a teammate, he shows up with skill, compassion, and a steady hand. We’re lucky to have him... and even luckier to call him part of the CVVH family.

Help us wish him the happiest of birthdays today!

Would You Know How to Move an Injured Pet?

⛑️ Emergencies happen fast, and if your pet is sick, injured, or in distress, how you move them can make a big difference.

Whether it’s a sudden accident on a hike, a heat-related collapse, or a painful injury at home, handling your pet carefully and calmly can help prevent further harm on the way to the vet.

Here are a few quick tips:
✔️ Stay calm. Speak gently and move slowly.
✔️ Don’t assume they won’t bite. Even the sweetest pet may react out of pain or fear. Use a towel or blanket to gently wrap or shield their head if needed.
✔️ Use support. A blanket, board, or large towel can act as a stretcher for larger pets.
✔️ Keep them level. Avoid twisting or tilting the spine or limbs.
✔️ Call us immediately to schedule an emergency visit - we’ll help guide you through the next steps: (775) 782-3693

Our team is here 7 days a week to provide urgent and emergency care. Don’t second-guess...just call. We’ll take it from there.

Sunburn Isn’t Just a Human Problem

☀️ The high desert sun in Northern Nevada is no joke—and yes, pets can get sunburned, too.

Short-haired dogs, dogs with light-colored coats, and hairless breeds are especially vulnerable, particularly in sensitive areas such as the nose, ears, belly, and inner thighs.

Here’s how to protect your pet from painful sun exposure:
✔️ Limit direct sun time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
✔️ Provide shaded rest areas during walks, hikes, or backyard play
✔️ Use pet-safe sunscreen—never human products
✔️ Watch for redness, peeling, or tenderness, and call us if you notice signs of sunburn

Not sure if your pet is at risk? We’re happy to advise on safe sun protection based on breed, coat type, and activity level.

GDV Awareness – What Dog Owners Should Know About Bloat
🚨 Bloat in dogs isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s a life-threatening emergency.
Gastric dilation-volvulus (GDV) happens when a dog’s stomach fills with gas and twists on itself. It cuts off blood flow, causes intense pain, and can lead to death in hours if untreated.

It’s most common in large or deep-chested breeds, but any dog can be at risk—especially after eating too quickly, exercising after meals, or swallowing excess air.

Know the signs of bloat:
⚠️ Distended or tight abdomen
⚠️ Non-productive retching (trying to vomit but nothing comes up)
⚠️ Restlessness or pacing
⚠️ Sudden weakness or collapse
⚠️ Rapid breathing, drooling, or signs of severe discomfort
If you see these symptoms, don’t wait.
📞 Call Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital immediately to schedule a same-day emergency visit: (775) 782-3693

Fast action can save your dog’s life.

💦 Does your pet dive in or stay dry?
Here in Northern Nevada, we’ve got lakes, rivers, and backyard sprinklers—plenty of ways for pets to stay cool. But not every pet is a water lover.

Tell us:
What’s your pet’s water personality?
🐕 Total water dog – can’t keep them out!
😼 Nope – strictly paws-on-dry-land
🐾 Only if it’s shallow and supervised
🛁 They only swim… in the bathtub (grudgingly)

Drop your answer in the comments — or better yet, tag us in a photo of your pet’s splash (or no-splash) summer moment!

Male Cats & Urinary Blockages: What You Need to Know
😿 Did you know that male cats are at higher risk of developing a life-threatening urinary blockage?

Feline urethral obstruction (FUO) can occur suddenly, and it’s one of the most common reasons we see emergency visits for male cats, especially those that are younger or stressed.

Signs to watch for:
🚫 Straining to urinate
🚫 Going in and out of the litter box with no success
🚫 Crying or vocalizing while urinating
🚫 Licking the ge***al area
🚫 Blood in urine
🚫 Hiding, vomiting, or loss of appetite

If left untreated, a blockage can lead to kidney damage, severe pain, and even death within 24–48 hours. This is a true emergency.

If your cat is showing any of these symptoms, call us immediately: (775) 782-3693

FUO is painful and scary, but it’s also treatable, especially when caught early. Don’t wait if something feels off.

Tick Season Isn’t Over Yet
🕷️ Think tick season is behind us? Not in Northern Nevada. Ticks remain active well into late summer, especially in wooded areas, tall grasses, and near lakes. Even short walks or backyard adventures can put your pet at risk.

Ticks can carry serious illnesses like Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Early prevention is key.
✅ Use monthly preventatives — ask us what’s best for your dog or outdoor cat
✅ Do daily tick checks — especially around the ears, neck, armpits, and between toes
✅ Keep grass trimmed and avoid overgrown trails
✅ Yes, cats need protection too — outdoor cats are just as vulnerable

Found a tick? Remove it with tweezers, keeping them close to the skin, and pull straight out. If you're unsure or notice unusual symptoms, give us a call.
