Daily heel work with Amelia and her handler - today she got beat by Astra. Shameful 🤣

We have put in a lot of work this week, and we couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. What I’ve learned most, is how folks with visual disabilities have to plan every aspect of their life in advance. Amazingly, this is quite handy for dog training, as she is the BEST client, following all plans to a T. We could all learn from the forethought, fortitude, and strategy it takes for some people to live their life. I am so proud of Beth and Amelia. Beth has refused to give up, and Amelia is somehow perfect. I took this client with the dog sight unseen. Risky. Very risky. I just knew, and so did Beth. She was the one. Can anyone guess her breed?!! She’s a GSD and….? Comment your guesses!

Amelia is an 8 month old GSD mix starting first, an obedience program, with the hope she makes it all the way through tasking.

I haven’t taken on an SD in some time because honestly, I got angry. I got angry at folks wanting to game the system, not following training, getting off breeds and calling me with problems that won’t be fixed by training. I was mad that the service dog world had been completely taken over by narcissists who insist on taking their dog into the grocery store.

But, I met Amelia’s new mom, and she wasn’t that. She wasn’t that at all. She is suffering from a degenerate disease after a life changing divorce, and now, is home bound. Due to her disabilities she MUST have a dog at a level of training that is safe and manageable for her, and hopes that one day, Amelia can help her take walks and scoot to the store. Such simple luxuries.

At the same time, Amelia was headed to the shelter.

A dog and a human, saving each other. And me, the medium that will bring them together in harmony.

Welcome, Amelia. Your mom has been waiting for you.
