🐾 Why Does My Puppy Keep Testing Positive for Giardia or Worms? 🐾
We've seen so many puppies in lately, and we love it! Bringing home a new pup is exciting, but many pet owners are surprised when their puppy tests positive for Giardia or intestinal parasites during those first few months.
Here's why it's actually very common:
🦠 Puppies are born with immature immune systems. This makes them more susceptible to parasites and infections than adult dogs.
🐕 Many puppies are exposed before they ever come home. Some intestinal parasites can be passed from mom to puppies before birth or through nursing. Others are picked up from the environment, littermates, or contaminated water and soil.
🌱 Puppies explore the world with their mouths. Sticks, grass, puddles, dirt, and even other animals' f***s can expose them to parasites like Giardia, roundworms, hookworms, and more.
🔄 One negative test doesn't always mean they're in the clear. Parasites don't shed eggs consistently, which means a stool sample may test negative one day and positive the next. This is why routine testing and deworming are so important.
