Call for Horses with PPID! 🐴

Up to 30% of horses over age 15 will be diagnosed with PPID (formerly Cushing’s). Common signs include a long, shaggy coat that doesn’t shed, weight loss, muscle loss, increased drinking/urination, behavior changes, infections, decrease in fertility, and laminitis.

The UMN Equine Genetics and Genomics Laboratory is conducting a research study to better understand the genetics of PPID and how horses respond to pergolide, the most common treatment. Help them improve the care of senior horses. ❤️

Giving your horse an intramuscular vaccine? Here’s how to do it properly.

Spring brings green grass, muddy boots, shedding coats… and vaccines.

Something worth keeping in mind — when your veterinarian administers your horse’s vaccines, manufacturers like Boehringer Ingelheim and Zoetis have support programs in place that may apply if a properly vaccinated horse still develops a related disease. They’re able to stand behind those cases because they can verify how the vaccine was stored, handled, and given.

That level of assurance isn’t the same when vaccines are given outside of veterinary care.

And yet — it has become normalized within our industry for horse owners and caregivers to give vaccines themselves. It’s legal, practical, and many times the more accessible option (not applicable to rabies vaccination, which is required to be administered by a veterinarian).

While we do prefer for Keith to vaccinate the horses in our care — where proper handling, administration, and documentation can be ensured — we understand the reality, and we support our clients’ choices.

Giving an intramuscular injection isn’t complicated, but it does need to be done correctly.

Meet the team behind Bogatch Equine 👋

Bogatch Equine was built by husband-and-wife team Keith and Marissa Bogatch — grounded in experience, communication, and a shared commitment to thoughtful, collaborative care.

Keith Bogatch, DVM has an approach to care shaped by years of practice at Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course, where a calm, steady presence and sound clinical judgment are essential every day. His work is deliberate and focused, emphasizing clear thinking, practical diagnostics, and doing what is right for the horse. He now carries that experience forward to horses and their people across Long Island, Saratoga Springs, and western Vermont through private ambulatory practice, while also serving as Associate Professor of Equine Medicine at LIU College of Veterinary Medicine.

Marissa Bogatch is a lifelong horsewoman and speech-language pathologist, with a deep appreciation for behavior, non-verbal communication, and the quiet connection between horses and people—and its power to bring out the best in each of us. She helps guide the client experience and supports care alongside Keith, ensuring every interaction is thoughtful, consistent, and grounded in trust.

Remember when your parents used to tell you to wait 30 minutes after eating before going for a swim? Unlike us, horses can actually benefit from eating forage before they exercise, as it may help reduce the risk of gastric ulcers.

While a variety of factors can contribute to the development of stomach ulcers (medications, diet, stress, etc.), one train of thought is that these areas of irritation result as a consequence of the acid of the stomach splashing against unprotected parts of the stomach lining. When a horse eats forage, the hay can help absorb some of that acid and thus reduce the risk of ulcer formation.

It is important to note that a forage meal (one comprised of long stem hay) provides the most benefit, while eating large volumes of concentrate feeds (such as oats, corn, or other cereal grains) can actually increase the amount of acid within the stomach.

As always, please be sure to consult with your veterinarian regarding further diagnostics and treatments if you have concerns that your horse may have gastric ulcers.
