When it's too cold for walking outside, give your dog a chance to use their nose inside! I hid a few treats in Oliver's toy basket, including a few in the treat dispensing toys. This allowed us the opportunity to work on his basic obedience behavior of a down stay on his bed, waiting for the release to go look, and gave him an opportunity to sniff through his toy bin to find the rewards.

⚠️ EHM Outbreak Update: What Horse Owners Need to Know

The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) is monitoring a multi-state outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) linked to the WPRA World Finals & Elite Barrel Race (Nov 5–9 in Waco, TX).

Confirmed cases so far:
• Texas: 11 EHM cases
• Oklahoma: 1 EHV-1 (non-neuro), 3 EHM
• Louisiana: 3 EHM
• Colorado: 1 EHM
• New Mexico: 1 EHM
• Arizona: 3 EHV-1 (no clinical signs)
• Washington: 2 EHV-1 (no clinical signs)

(Note: The Maryland case on 11/18/25 is not linked to this outbreak.)

*As of Nov. 22nd, there are no confirmed cases of EHM in New York or Massachusetts.

About EHM

This outbreak is caused by EHV-1, a virus that usually leads to respiratory illness but can sometimes trigger neurologic disease (EHM). Neurologic signs occur due to inflammation and reduced blood flow to the brain/spinal cord.

Signs of EHM may include:
• Fever
• Swollen limbs
• Hindlimb weakness or incoordination
• Urine dribbling
• In severe cases: behavior changes, cranial nerve deficits, seizures, or inability to stand

Most horses recover—about 60–70% with prompt treatment and supportive care.

✏️ Join Boehringer veterinarian, Dr. Julie Settlage, this Monday night, Nov. 24th at 7PM and learn more about EHV-1 and one of its sequela, EHM. Please utilize the survey to submit any questions by midnight on Sunday night. She will do her best to answer as many of the submitted questions as possible.

For my friends with horses who are looking for more information on the EHV-1 outbreak based in Waco, TX, this is a great post from a Vet based in KY. Here in upstate NY our risk is minimal, based on recent travel/exposure.

My phone has been blowing up this morning regarding the swirling information about the EHV-1 (neurological form of Herpes Virus) outbreak! And I totally understand, but some info is true, and some is just hysteria. SO...here we go:

Most of this has stemmed from posts about a serious outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) associated with recent barrel racing events in Waco, Texas. Some affected horses have developed the neurologic form of the disease (EHM), and there have been deaths.

What this means for our area right now:
• At this time, there is no evidence of a similar, active EHV-1 outbreak in our local area.
• EHV-1 is an endemic virus – we see isolated cases somewhere in the U.S. almost every year, including Ohio and other states earlier in 2025. That is not new.
• The highest risk horses right now are those that:
– Attended the WPRA/Elite barrel racing events in Waco Nov 5–9, or
– Have had close contact (same trailer, barn, pen, or event) with horses that did.

If your horse fits that higher-risk group:
• Please contact your clinic immediately so we/they can put a monitoring and isolation plan in place.
• Check temperatures twice daily for 14 days after the last possible exposure and call if you see a fever (≥101.5°F), respiratory signs, or any stumbling/weakness.
• Do not haul these horses or mix them with new horses until we’ve discussed a plan.

If your horse has not had contact with that event pipeline:
• Your horse’s risk is similar to a normal show season – EHV-1 is always in the background, which is why we emphasize everyday biosecurity.
• Continue your regular vaccination schedule, avoid nose-to-nose contact with unknown horses, don’t share buckets or tack at shows, and stay home with any horse that has a fever or respiratory signs.

About the vaccine:
• The “flu/rhino” vaccines do help reduce respiratory disease and viral shedding, but no current vaccine can reliably prevent the neurologic form (EHM). Biosecurity and early detection are still our best tools.

We are actively monitoring official updates from state veterinarians and the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC). If the situation changes in our region, we will update you promptly with clear guidance.

I'll add comments with more data and what I've found so far, but this was the quick and dirty synopsis.

Keeping your pets and animals up to date on their rabies vaccination not only keeps them safe, it helps keep you (and any else who cones in contact with them) safe! There are pets who cannot be vaccinated due to individual health concerns, so it's always best to speak with your Vet about what is best for your animals.

👻 We hope everyone had a great Halloween! Now here’s something TRULY scary and it’s NOT a trick! 😱

🚨 Rabies Alert 🚨

🦌The Department of Health has confirmed a recent case of rabies in a white tailed deer in Columbia County. Additionally, a horse in southern Berkshire County was bitten by a skunk confirmed to have rabies. That barn was placed on a 45-day quarantine. ☣️

🦠 Rabies is a fatal virus that affects the nervous system of all mammals — including humans, pets, and horses. It is spread through the saliva of infected animals, most often by bites (not skunk spray). 🦨

☠️ Once clinical signs are present, rabies is 100% fatal. It is also 100% preventable through vaccination. All horses, even ones that don’t leave your property, need to be vaccinated. Rabies will come to them! 🦊

⚠️ Important Reminders:
• 🦝 Do not approach or handle wild animals or stray domestic animals acting strangely.
• 📞 If you suspect a rabid animal, contact your local Department of Health immediately before intervening.
• 🐴 Ensure your horses receive an annual rabies vaccination. If you are unsure when your horse’s vaccine is due, call or text our office at 518-767-2906.
