Now that Summer โ๏ธ in full swing, Spoiled Pawz would like to remind you of some safety points during these HOT ๐ฅต days here in Maryland for your dog.
๐งProvide Access to Water and Shade:
Always have fresh, cool water available, both indoors and outdoors.
Consider adding ice cubes to their water bowl to keep it cooler for longer.
Make sure your dog has access to shady areas, whether it's natural shade or a shaded structure.
๐ Cooling Methods:
Cooling mats: These can be especially helpful for dogs who like to lie down to cool off.
Wet towels: Dampen a towel and let your dog lie on it or gently rub it over their body.
Kiddie pools or dog-friendly swimming holes: If your dog enjoys water, these can be a great way to help them cool down.
Cooling vests: These can help deflect heat and cool your dog through evaporation.
๐๐ถโโ๏ธAdjust Exercise Routine:
Avoid walking your dog during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when temperatures are cooler. If you must walk on hot pavement, consider using dog booties to protect their paws.
Take frequent breaks during exercise to allow your dog to cool down.
โ ๏ธโ ๏ธ. Be Aware of Overheating Signs:
Excessive panting, drooling, bright red gums, lethargy, vomiting, or diarrhea can be signs of heatstroke.
If you notice any of these signs, move your dog to a cool, shaded area, offer water, and seek veterinary attention immediately.
๐ Other Tips:
Avoid leaving your dog in a parked car, even for a short time, as temperatures inside can rise rapidly.
Consider grooming your dog regularly to help them shed excess fur and allow for better airflow.
Offer frozen treats, like ice cubes or frozen Kongs, to help them cool down from the inside out.
