What is a Foxhunt vs What is Hunter Pace? Let us explain the difference!
A foxhunt involves hounds, horses, and riders following the pack as they work a scent.
The pace can change throughout the day—walk, trot, canter, gallop—depending on the terrain and what the hounds are doing.
It’s a fluid, unscripted day in the countryside, all about watching hounds work and enjoying the tradition of the sport.
It’s a group activity with a Field Masters leading the riders and everyone following their direction. The groups are called 'fields' move at different speeds depending on what you (and your horse) are looking for that day.
A Hunter Pace
A timed trail ride meant to simulate the rhythm of a foxhunt—but without hounds, quarry, or the unpredictability.
Riders go out in teams over a marked course and try to match the “optimal time,” which represents what a real hunt might move like.
You can go at your own pace, enjoy the scenery, and it’s usually more relaxed and casual. It’s competitive in a friendly way, but not a race.
In short:
A foxhunt is the real thing—hounds working scent and riders following.
A hunter pace is the fun practice ride inspired by it.
We'll gladly introduce you to both and show you the difference!
