💡Things to know about the American Corgi.

An American Corgi is a popular designer mix between traditional a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and a Cardigan Welsh Corgi. They combine traits from both corgi breeds, which is why they can vary a bit in appearance, personality, and coat colors. For now, they are not "officially recognized" by the American Kennel Club(AKC), but can be registered through Continental Kennel Club(CKC).

Because the "American Corgi" is a modern designer crossbreed rather than an ancient or official breed, it does not have a precise historical origin date, but the mix first began gaining noticeable popularity in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

Here is the timeline of how they came to exist:

Early 2000s (The Precursors): For decades, standard Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis were occasionally crossed by accident. However, the deliberate branding of an "American Corgi" did not start until the booming designer dog trend of the 2000s.

Late 2000s to 2010s (The Visual Boom): Breeders actively started mixing the two distinct breeds to introduce the striking blue merle coat color (native to Cardigans) into the smaller body shape of the Pembroke.

Present Day: Social media significantly boosted their existence. Photos of blue-eyed, merle-coated Corgi puppies went viral on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, driving up the consumer demand that fuels their breeding today.

Traits & Characteristics

Size

* Small to medium-sized dog
* Usually weighs around 20–38 lbs
* Height is about 10–13 inches tall

Personality

American Corgis are known for being:

* Intelligent
* Loyal and affectionate
* Playful and energetic
* Social with families
* Alert and protective

They often become very attached to their owners and enjoy being involved in daily activities.

Temperament

They are generally:

* Friendly with children
* Good with other pets if socialized early
* Sometimes stubborn due to their herding instincts
* Vocal — they may bark to alert you

Because corgis were originally herding dogs, they may try to “herd” people or other animals by nudging or lightly nipping at heels.

Physical Characteristics

Coat

They usually have:

* Medium-length double coat
* Thick fur that sheds year-round
* Fluffy appearance

Common Colors

American Corgis can come in many colors, including:

* Red and white
* Sable
* Black and tan
* Tricolor
* Blue merle
* Red merle

The merle coloring is more commonly inherited from the Cardigan side.

Ears & Tail

* Large upright ears
* Tail may be naturally bobbed, long, or docked depending on genetics

Energy Level

They are active dogs despite their short legs.
They enjoy:

* Walks
* Playtime
* Puzzle toys
* Training games

Without enough stimulation, they can become bored and bark excessively or chew things.

How to Take Care of an American Corgi

Exercise

Aim for:

* 30–60 minutes of activity daily
* Avoid excessive jumping because their long backs can be prone to injury

Good activities:

* Walks
* Fetch
* Light agility
* Obedience training

Grooming

Because of their thick coat:

* Brush 2–4 times weekly
* Expect heavy shedding during seasonal changes
* Bathe only when needed
* Clean ears regularly
* Trim nails monthly

Feeding

Feed:

* High-quality dog food appropriate for age and size
* Measured portions to avoid obesity

Corgis gain weight easily, and extra weight can strain their back and joints.

Training

American Corgis are very smart and learn quickly.
Best methods:

* Positive reinforcement
* Consistency
* Early socialization

They usually respond very well to treats and praise.

Health Concerns

Like many corgis, they may be prone to:

* Hip dysplasia
* Degenerative myelopathy
* Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD)
* Obesity
* Eye problems

Regular vet visits and maintaining a healthy weight are very important.

Are They Good Family Dogs?

Yes — American Corgis are often excellent family companions because they are:

* Loving
* Funny
* Intelligent
* Adaptable

They do best in homes where they receive attention, mental stimulation, and regular exercise.

One thing many owners love about them is their big personality packed into a small body.

💡Now, here's about the Cardigan Welsh Corgi.
(Post your cutest Cardigan Welsh Corgi picture down at the comment section).

💡Things to know:

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is one of the oldest herding dog breeds from Wales. They are famous for their long bodies, short legs, fox-like faces, large rounded ears, and fluffy tails. Unlike the more common Pembroke Corgi, Cardigans usually have a full long tail and a sturdier build.

History

Cardigan Welsh Corgis were originally bred to herd cattle and guard farms. Historians believe their ancestors arrived in Wales with Celtic tribes thousands of years ago, making them one of the oldest British dog breeds.

Their short height helped them avoid kicks from cattle while herding. Even though they are small, they are tough, agile, and hardworking dogs.

Appearance

Common traits include:

* Long body with short legs
* Bushy fox-like tail
* Large rounded ears
* Double coat that sheds year-round
* Colors include red, brindle, black-and-white, sable, and blue merle

Blue merle Cardigans are especially popular because of their unique marbled coat and sometimes blue eyes.

Personality & Temperament

Cardigans are known for being:

* Loyal and affectionate
* Intelligent and trainable
* Calm but playful
* Protective of family
* Slightly more reserved with strangers compared to Pembrokes

Many owners describe them as “big dogs in small bodies.” Reddit corgi owners often mention that Cardigans tend to be more laid-back and deeply bonded with their humans.

Because they are herding dogs, they may:

* Nip at heels during play
* Bark to alert owners
* Try to “herd” kids or other pets

Exercise & Care

Despite their small size, Cardigans need daily exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy:

* Walks
* Fetch
* Agility training
* Puzzle toys
* Herding activities

Their thick double coat sheds heavily, especially during spring and fall, so regular brushing is important.

Health

Typical lifespan:

* Around 12–15 years

Common health concerns:

* Hip dysplasia
* Back problems
* Obesity if overfed
* Eye conditions

Because of their long backs and short legs, keeping them at a healthy weight is very important.

They make wonderful family dogs when properly trained and exercised. Cardigans are especially loved for their loyalty, funny personalities, and expressive faces.

I attached some pictures of the Cardigan Welsh Corgis that I found on the internet.

Things to know about the Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is one of the oldest herding breeds in the world and originally came from Wales. They were bred to herd cattle, sheep, and even horses by nipping at the animals’ heels and quickly dodging kicks because of their short stature. Their name likely comes from the Welsh words “cor” (dwarf) and “gi” (dog), meaning “dwarf dog.”

Pembrokes became especially famous because Queen Elizabeth II loved the breed and owned more than 30 corgis throughout her life, which helped make them internationally popular.

Traits of Pembroke Welsh Corgis

Personality

* Extremely intelligent and quick learners
* Loyal and affectionate with family
* Playful, goofy, and social
* Alert and protective despite their small size
* Often “big dog energy” in a compact body

Energy Level

Corgis are high-energy working dogs. Even though they’re small, they need:

* Daily walks
* Mental stimulation
* Playtime
* Training sessions

Without enough activity, they can become:

* Barky
* Destructive
* Stubborn
* Overweight

Herding Instinct

Many corgis naturally herd people, kids, or other pets by:

* Chasing
* Nipping ankles
* Blocking movement

This behavior isn’t aggression — it’s instinct — but it should be redirected early with training.

Intelligence

They rank among the smartest dog breeds and respond well to:

* Positive reinforcement
* Treat training
* Consistent routines

They can also outsmart inexperienced owners if boundaries are inconsistent.

Physical Traits

* Short legs with a long body
* Double coat that sheds heavily year-round
* Fox-like face and upright ears
* Average weight: 25–30 lbs
* Lifespan: 12–15 years

Popular coat colors include:

* Red and white
* Sable
* Tricolor

How to Handle and Care for a Corgi

1. Exercise Daily

Aim for:

* 1–2 walks daily
* Fetch or tug games
* Puzzle toys
* Short training sessions

A bored corgi becomes noisy and mischievous fast.

2. Protect Their Back

Because of their long spine and short legs:

* Avoid excessive jumping
* Use ramps for beds/couches if possible
* Keep them at a healthy weight

Obesity increases the risk of back and joint problems.

3. Train Early

Start young with:

* Socialization
* Leash training
* Bite inhibition
* Basic commands

Corgis thrive with structure and consistency.

4. Manage Shedding

Their thick coat sheds a lot.
Helpful routines:

* Brush 2–4 times weekly
* Use an undercoat rake during shedding season
* Regular baths every few weeks

5. Mental Stimulation

Since they’re working dogs, they enjoy having “jobs”:

* Agility
* Obedience
* Nose work
* Trick training
* Herding games

Common Health Concerns

Some issues seen in corgis include:

* Hip dysplasia
* Degenerative myelopathy
* IVDD/back problems
* Obesity
* Eye conditions

Responsible breeders usually health-test their dogs.

Best Type of Owner for a Corgi

Corgis do best with owners who are:

* Active
* Consistent with training
* Home enough for interaction
* Willing to exercise and mentally engage them

They’re amazing companions when properly trained and stimulated — affectionate, hilarious, expressive, and full of personality.

That's all for now. In my next post let's tackle the Cardigan Welsch Corgi. Let's learn about our fur babies together.
