The birds around here are nothing if not resourceful. May we present a nest made of cheetah hair. No animals were harmed. Animal Care staff found this abandon nest on the ground.

Most native bird nests are strictly protected by federal and state laws. Under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), it is illegal to destroy, disturb, or possess an active nest, eggs, or dependent young without a special permit.

A nest is considered active if it contains eggs, chicks, or dependent fledglings. Removing an active nest is a violation and can cause parents to abandon their young.

If you find a nest in a precarious spot (such as on your porch, roof, or a vehicle), the best course of action is to wait patiently until the fledglings have left the nest on their own.

We will always be excited by the little things. While exotic, Helmeted guinea fowl are not uncommon on farms and ranches in the region.

They are prized for their relentless foraging, actively hunt ticks, grasshoppers, fleas, and beetles. They often travel further and scratch less than traditional domestic chickens. They are incredibly vigilant and highly vocal. If a predator, or unfamiliar person approaches, they sound a loud, raucous alarm. They may even mob-attack smaller predators like snakes and foxes to protect the flock.
