An early morning harvest 🍅🌽🫑

What started as a quick trip to the garden, turned into a full on harvest! I started with the corn because it has looked ready for days. They were a little past their prime but were still sweet and delicious.

Next I spotted the first patty pan squash of the season! It will go on a chef salad for lunch along with a bell pepper and the handful of tomatoes that were ripe. Tomatoes have been a real struggle this year! The deer discovered them early and have eaten their tops at least 3 times. Once they finally decided to leave them alone, the horn worms moved in and have eaten the plants down to not much more than stems. It's not quite time to plant the fall garden so I'm going to leave them in the ground to see if they will recover.

Then there was basil! So much basil! Opal, holy (tulsi)basil and Genovese! The tulsi is headed to my tea cup. And the Genovese? Well, I plan on stocking our freezer with pesto. A taste of summer in the cold, dreary winter months sounds perfect! I haven't decided yet what to do with the opal.

What summer goodness are you enjoying right now?

🍕✨ What’s better than pizza? A handmade pizza with homegrown goodness!

A sweet friend shared their tomato bounty with us a few days ago — I’ve only gotten a handful of yellow cherry tomatoes this year. Between the deer munching the tops and the hornworms moving in, my poor plants have had a rough season. I’m still holding out hope they’ll bounce back!

But I digress… I roasted those beautiful tomatoes with our own garlic (and some store-bought onions 😉) and blended them into the most delicious sauce. Next up — fresh mozzarella made with local cow’s milk.

I did cheat a little on the crust and bought a ready-made dough. A quick stretch, a dollop of sauce, and thick slices of that creamy cheese — into the oven it went. When the crust was crisp and the cheese perfectly melty, I topped it all off with fresh basil from the garden.

And just like that… a homemade, homegrown margherita pizza is ready to enjoy! 💚🍕🌱

Who knew corn could look like a jewel? Little garden surprises like this remind me why I love planting unique things — there’s so much magic waiting to be found.

Have you grown anything beautiful lately? 💚

TGIF, y’all! 🧺🌞

Today’s market haul is giving déjà vu vibes - but when it’s this good, why mess with a great thing? Can you guess what my favorites are yet? 😄

Twisted Willow Acres had glazed peach bread this morning, and I couldn’t resist. Add a hot cup of coffee and that’s breakfast bliss—at least until the rest of the family finds it!

The cucumbers from W&W Farms are still looking amazing, so I grabbed more to finally try making homemade dill pickles. Their red-flesh peaches also caught my eye—how could I not bring some home?

Umphrey Farms had gorgeous eggplant again, and I’m hoping Mario will recreate that crispy fried eggplant with marinara he made last week (it was so good).

And of course, I grabbed more zucchini—until my garden kicks in, these little green gems are a weekly staple.

The Gadsden Farmers Market is open until 12 today—go show some love to our local farmers and makers! 💚🌾

New adventures & old projects 🛠️🐣

We finally added guineas to the farm! I've wanted them for years but always hesitated—mostly because I’d heard they were ridiculously loud. After surviving Jeff the Destroyer (the rooster who used to crow outside our bedroom window at 4am sharp), I wasn’t exactly eager to invite more noise-makers in.

But recently I saw some guineas on another farm and realized... they’re really no louder than our chickens. So, I took the plunge! I’m hoping they'll help keep the tick and snake population in check—especially since snakes and I do not get along (seriously, it's an irrational fear at this point 😅).

New animals mean new housing—or in this case, reworking the old goat barn. Isaiah and I teamed up to fortify it for our new feathered friends. The chickens were both amused and mildly offended as we repurposed their wire fencing to line the bottom of the barn and keep digging critters out. We dug down, laid the wire, secured it, and packed the dirt back in. Isaiah even built a sturdier door, and just like that, the guinea palace was ready!

At first, the guineas were a little shy, but they’ve started to settle in nicely. Once they grow a bit and get comfortable with the area, they’ll be free-ranging and officially on tick patrol!

It’s Friday… and you know what that means — Gadsden Market Day! 🌿🧺

As summer heats up, the market tables are overflowing with more and more veggies and it was so hard to choose what to bring home today.

My first stop, as always, was the sourdough — and this week Twisted Willow Acres had sandwich loaves! Of course, I grabbed one. Then I made my way to see Hal at Hendrix Honey to restock the honey supply for my favorite Lemon Balm + Mint tea 🍯🌱

From there, I loaded up at Umphrey Farm: eggplant, okra, cantaloupe, and another beautiful cabbage. And of course, I couldn’t leave without saying hi to my sweet friend Michelle at W&W Farms — she hooked me up with those amazing cucumbers and peaches again! 🍑🥒

What should I put on the menu this week?

This morning’s woods walk was full of surprises.
I headed out to plant a patch of ramps a friend shared with me, and ended up spotting green sweet gum balls scattered across the forest floor and usnea blown like lace from the trees. I gathered a good bit of both—and then came the mushrooms.

One of them was snow fungus, which I’ve never found before! The others are still a mystery to me. Mushrooms are something I’d love to learn more about—any other foragers out there who can help with ID?

The high winds last night made for a foragers dream! Who else has been out exploring today? What did you find?

This week’s market haul has my creative juices flowing! 🌿 The cucumbers were so good last week, I had to grab more—cucumber yogurt sauce might be on the menu soon. The zucchini are just the right size for battering and frying (because who doesn’t love fried zucchini?).

I can never resist a good peach—they taste like pure summer. 🍑 And I managed to snag the last of the plums, which just so happen to be ’s favorite!

Rounding it all out: a classic sourdough boule, which will pair perfectly with a Sunday roast. 🥖

What are you cooking this week?

Friday morning's market haul 🍓🥒🍞

There's just something special about the first market trip of the year! It stirs up my excitement for the season and gets the creative juices flowing! My vegetables aren't producing yet so I headed out this morning with a friend to see what the local farms had to offer. They did not disappoint!

Strawberry season will be wrapping up soon so I grabbed two gallons- one for fresh eating and one to make jam with. This enormous cabbage caught my eye, next. It's the perfect size to have some for fresh eating and some to make sauerkraut with. And who doesn't love a good cucumber or squash? On my way out of the market, snagged a fresh boule of sourdough to smother with the soon-to-be strawberry jam.

If you're in the Gadsden area, there's still time to get your own market haul! They are open till 12 today!
