They are loyal, intelligent and beautiful animals and it breaks our hearts to think of them suffering or dying in shelters, or worse yet, dumped on the street. We are a 100% all volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue. We are funded through adoptions and donations from people just like you. Our hardworking and dedicated team is made up of GSD lovers who give up their time to care for and find loving

forever homes for the dogs in our program. The team has fostered and saved over 1,500 German Shepherd Dogs since we began in 2013! Most of our dogs come from shelters where they have been abandoned. Some come from owners who, no longer able to care for them, give their dog to us to find a loving forever home. The good news is that we encounter few dogs that we feel have been abused or seriously mistreated. Each dog that comes into our program is evaluated to the best of our ability. Our evaluators have many years of experience with the breed and have spent many hours learning dog behavior and language, worked with trainers, spent countless hours at shelters, etc. We strive to have dogs in our program that are people and dog friendly and we are firm believers in providing our adopters with full behavioral and medical disclosure on every dog in our program. Our dogs are placed in a foster home that is experienced with the breed or a daycare facility where they are evaluated for social skills with other dogs. Once we have spent some time getting to know each dog, we make the dog available for adoption. When you apply to adopt one of our dogs you will go through our adoption process where we learn more about you, your experience and your lifestyle. Our goal is to make a perfect match so our dogs stay with their new family and everyone is off to a good start. Many of our adopters decide to volunteer by fostering, fundraising, walking/grooming/transporting dogs or becoming matchmakers and helping more dogs find that perfect home. It’s a rewarding activity (no matter how big or small your role) that every rescue (and rescue dog) is grateful for. If you don't have the time to volunteer, you can donate. Have you ever wondered about the process to adopt a dog from Bay Area German Shepherd Rescue (BAGSR)? Does it seem overwhelming? It's really not!

1) Complete the on-line Adoption Application
2) An Adoption Counselor will reach out to you for a virtual home visit
3) Once approved, work with your Adoption Counselor on matching you with your new best friend!
4) Adopt your new dog!

Once you have adopted, we are always a phone call away to answer any questions you may have. You're now part of the BAGSR family!

“TIMBER  is extremely friendly and very loved.  He broke his leash and went chasing after a deer  on a run at 9:30 at night on Ring Mountain.  He grew up on the mountain so he knows how to get home we're incredibly worried at this point.  if anybody hiking or walking in that area has seen or heard anything we are worried that his leashes caught in a tree and he can't free himself to get home.  please be on the lookout. Yes... this is the same dog from 2 years ago. His Airtag is malfunctioning.  he was attached to a green leash and he was wearing two collar including an orange one”

Are you ready to share your home with an active, happy, cute, friendly PUPPY?? Tiva may be exactly what you are looking for. She's full of s***k and personality and she's so ready to get life in her new home started. Just remember, she's a PUPPY and an active one. She will keep you on your toes. She plays well with other dogs but probably not a match if your other dog does not appreciate puppy energy because she has plenty of it.
She is crate trained, potty trained, likes to ride in the car and enjoys meeting new people. She's a friendly girl that will need a family that wants to show her the world and all it has to offer. She's pretty good on her leash, no reactivity or silly behavior, but she is still learning. She loves toys and will need a home that will teach her what's a toy and what's not. This little girl has so much potential and she's ready for a home that will give her lots of choices. Super sweet pup but you must be ready for an energetic puppy. If you think you have all it takes to mold this little firecracker into the perfect pooch, come meet her. She will steal your heart....and probably everything else you leave around.......

Here’s one of the hard realities of rescue!

We receive daily requests from people wanting/needing to rehome their German Shepherds. Sometimes we receive a dozen requests in a day! It’s heartbreaking, but most of the time we have to say no. We can only take in the number of dogs for which we have fosters. We give callers other possible options and ways to keep their dog, but most people aren’t interested in the options or have run out of time.

Currently, we have several dogs being boarded because we don’t have enough fosters. Paying for boarding is a huge financial obligation for our small organization, but we do it if we don’t have an option for a dog in desperate need. Boarding is certainly not sustainable long term.

How can you help? You can become a foster! The organization pays for all of the dogs needs, including food and medical care. You just need to provide a safe and loving place to stay. Can you help? If so, please complete the Foster Application here: https://bayareagsr.org/fostering
