Scatter feed, instead of a bowl. Spread their kibble out on a large plate or a small sheet pan so they have to move around and find each piece. It slows them down naturally, and it lets them use their nose, which is something dogs love to do and is a calm, satisfying way for them to eat. A lot of people reach for a slow feeder bowl, but for puppies, many get frustrated, and at times that frustration can lead to resource guarding.

Slowing them down matters, because eating that fast can mean gulping air and sometimes throwing it right back up. And there is usually a reason they eat like this. From the time they are tiny, puppies share every meal with their brothers and sisters, and the ones who eat fastest get the most. So by the time they come home, a lot of puppies have already learned that dinner is a race, even when there is nobody left to race against.

It is such a simple change, and most puppies start eating at a more relaxed pace within a few meals. And yes, they will probably still give you that look when it is gone.

Understanding Your Puppy's Behavior Most puppy training struggles don’t come from the puppy. They come from not understanding how behavior actually works. When you understand what’s shaping behavior, everything becomes clearer, calmer, and easier to solve. Choose Your Starting Point Not
