Walking this morning in God's Pocket. I am deeply grateful that I have been given the privilege to live here and the stewardship of this land. It wraps me up in such beauty and peace.

It’s International Cat Day and this week, a mountain lion was sighted on San Juan Island.
Historically, the San Juan Islands were home to wolves, but colonizers extirpated their population in the 1860s. The present day San Juan Islands rarely see large land predators, but the occasional bear or mountain lion has been known to appear - they are excellent swimmers!
A sighting like this can feel startling, but it's important to remember that these animals generally want nothing to do with people. In fact, there have only been two fatal cougar attacks in Washington in the last 100 years.
Here’s how we can all be good neighbors to our wildlife:
🐾 If you encounter a cougar:
Stay calm and stand your ground. Make yourself look as large and loud as possible. Do NOT run. Slowly back away to give it space.
Keep small children and pets close.
📞 Report sightings:
If you see the cougar, please report it to the WA Department of Fish & Wildlife at (877) 933-9847 or online at wdfw.wa.gov. This helps experts monitor its movement.
Stay safe on the trails!
Pet owners:
Also a reminder to please keep dogs leashed and close when you are on a hike. Allowing your pets off leash to react and harass wildlife risks an encounter that will get this mountain lion put down. That is not fair to the mountain lion nor being a responsible pet owner.

Guests enjoying the Nest and the Cottage this summer.

When the mind is festering with trouble or the heart torn, we can find healing among the silence of mountains or fields, or listen to the simple, steadying rhythm of waves. The slowness and stillness gradually takes us over. Our breathing deepens and our hearts calm and our hungers relent. When serenity is restored, new perspectives open to us and difficulty can begin to seem like an invitation to new growth.
This invitation to friendship with nature does of course entail a willingness to be alone out there. Yet this aloneness is anything but lonely. Solitude gradually clarifies the heart until a true tranquility is reached. The irony is that at the heart of that aloneness you feel intimately connected with the world. Indeed, the beauty of nature is often the wisest balm for it gently relieves and releases the caged mind.

Lovely walk in the neighborhood. I like visiting the three sheep. Miss my former life as a shepherd at times. The Nootka rose are blooming, beckoning bees. They flew away as I was positioning camera.
