Hurin is back at Apex for evaluation! We are grateful to his family for doing everything in their power to support him and give him the environment he needs. They did the right thing and reached out for support, but in the end didn’t have the results they wanted for Hurin, so he came back to us last night.
Due to his primary concern being leaving the fence he was put in, he is going to spend some time on a hi line that we built just for him. We will share more about this method of safe containment soon!
I had a nice conversation with his owner about the incidents that have occurred and will use those for context as we test Hurin with stock, female dogs, cats, etc.
Turns out, his Kiko goat herd started digging and squeezing out under the fence, and Hurin followed them. That’s how he learned fences are not the law. I had never heard of goats doing that before! We are going to be working on building back fence respect here.
He also has had some resource guarding moments towards other animals, never humans. This is manageable moving forward with a solid plan for food and treats without pressure from other critters. We all deserve to eat in peace. This also means that we won’t be giving out high value treats or items that could be worth protecting if other animals are around. These two rules eliminate almost all food guarding reactions. There is of course a level of environmental unpredictability that can contribute as well.
As breeders, we take responsibility for our puppies for their entire lives. We are here to troubleshoot, support and even take a dog back when he just isn’t thriving in his loving home.
We look forward to getting to know Hurin again, and seeing where he fits in the world. He will come with a list of requirements of a potential new home, and we will be strict on where he goes, as we are with all our puppies.
