☀️ Heatstroke Can Become an Emergency in Minutes
As temperatures rise, it's important to remember that pets can overheat much faster than people. Even a short walk during the hottest part of the day can put your pet at risk.

Watch for signs of heatstroke, including:
🐾 Excessive panting
🐾 Weakness or collapse
🐾 Vomiting or diarrhea
🐾 Bright red or pale gums
🐾 Difficulty breathing

If you think your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, don't wait. Move them to a cool area and seek veterinary care immediately.

Spending more time outdoors in the East Bay also means increased exposure to wildlife—including rattlesnakes.

Snake bites can progress quickly, with swelling, pain, and more serious systemic effects developing over a short period of time. Many of these patients need antivenom, IV support, and close observation.

With a board-certified criticalist on-site, Beacon is equipped to manage these cases with advanced monitoring and timely intervention throughout treatment.

If you suspect a snake bite, don’t wait—call (510) 657-6343 or seek emergency care right away.

What kinds of cases require Critical Care?

Critical Care is designed for pets who are unstable, rapidly changing, or need continuous monitoring and advanced support. These are often serious conditions where timing and close observation make a meaningful difference.

Some of the more common cases we see include:
• Hit by car or traumatic injuries
• Severe toxic exposures (rodenticide, medications, mushrooms)
• Difficulty breathing or respiratory distress
• Sepsis or severe infections
• Cluster seizures or neurologic emergencies
• Heart failure or other cardiac conditions
• Kidney failure or inability to urinate
• Severe vomiting and diarrhea (gastroenteritis)

At Beacon, these patients are cared for under the guidance of Dr. Lindsay Cuddy, DVM, DACVECC, a board-certified specialist in Emergency and Critical Care, with continuous monitoring and the ability to respond quickly as conditions change.

📞 If your pet is experiencing a serious or rapidly worsening condition, call us at (510) 657-6343.

What does “Critical Care” actually mean?

Critical Care is for patients who are unstable or require intensive monitoring and advanced support beyond standard hospitalization. These are often pets experiencing life-threatening conditions or recovering from serious emergencies.

At Beacon, our Critical Care team provides continuous monitoring, advanced therapies, and ongoing reassessment to support patients through every stage of stabilization and recovery.
