There are very few completely sterile bulls in the world, but there are a lot of sub-fertile ones. Those are the bulls that veterinarians look for when performing Breeding Soundness Exams (BSE) .

There are established standards that bulls must meet or exceed to pass a BSE. These standards include criteria for a physical examination, scrotal circumference and semen characteristics. These results taken together help classify each bull as “satisfactory,” “deferred” or “unsatisfactory", giving the producer information needed to make management decisions.

Ideally, BSE’s should be completed 30-60 days before the start of the breeding season, allowing for any issues to be taken care of before the season, and if a bull is found to be unsatisfactory, enough time for a replacement to be found.

We are excited to announce that Dr. Gus Peterson will be starting with us June 15th. Please read his introduction below.

Dear Clients,
I am excited to be joining Freeport Veterinary Service and can’t wait to meet all of you. But first, a little about myself.
I grew up on a row crop operation in Hallock, Minnesota. Although I was born to a crop-producing family, my interests in agriculture more closely aligns with livestock. I have always said that the moment that changed my life’s trajectory was when I was gifted a Holstein bottle calf from my godparents on my sixth birthday. I was a member of Kittson County 4-H, primarily exhibiting cattle and swine. As I grew older, my dad and I decided to start a beef cattle herd that my family continues to grow.

I attended North Dakota State University and studied Animal Science. While at NDSU, I was an active member of the Bison Dairy Club, Ag Ambassadors, Saddle & Sirloin, and Blue Key Honor Society. I competed on the Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Team and worked as a veterinary assistant at West Fargo Animal Hospital. It was during my undergraduate years that I started riding with the doctors at Freeport Veterinary Services and considered a future as a dairy veterinarian.

After graduating from NDSU, I enrolled in veterinary school at Iowa State University. There, I focused primarily on dairy and beef production medicine. I spent my summers conducting research projects revolving around calf health.

I am excited to join the team at Freeport Veterinary Service, become a member of the community, and work with the area’s producers.

Shout out to this guy! Gus, a vet student studying at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine spent last week with us and it wasn’t the first time. It’s pretty awesome to see a young man go all the way from undergrad to his senior year of vet school. Proud to be part of his journey.
