Double Bluff Beach Off Leash Dog Park

Double Bluff Beach Off Leash Dog Park Running along the base of steep Double Bluff, the Double Bluff Beach Off-Leash Area is a two-mile-long stretch of salt water beach on Useless Bay.

At the base of the bluffs, enormous tangles of driftwood make great doggy jungle gyms. When the tide is out, the beach is hundreds of feet wide but even at high tide, the beach is wide enough for dogs to run themselves to a state of blissful exhaustion. For humans, Double Bluff offers stunning views of Mt Rainier, the Seattle skyline, the Olympic Peninsula and the shipping lanes. Soaring Bald Eagl

es and Great Blue Herons wading at the edge of the surf can be seen frequently. Grey whales put in an occasional appearance, too, especially in the Spring. Double Bluff Beach offers a grassy picnic area, viewing benches, rest rooms, doggie p**p bags and a rinse station - which ensures that most of the sand stays at the beach and doesn't end up in your car. A dog-height drinking fountain is also available. Water is only turned on during summer months. Please note: Immediately adjacent to the parking lot is an area designated for public use where people can enjoy the beach without encountering off-leash dogs. The off-leash area begins about 500 feet from the parking lot - the boundary is marked by a windsock on a flagpole. Dogs MUST be leashed on the walk from the parking lot to the beginning of the off-leash area. The county leash-law is in effect until you reach the off-leash area, and violators are subject to a $500 fine. Double Bluff Beach opened in June, 1999 and continues to be a great success. In this multi-use area, please respect the off-leash boundaries and please pick up after your dogs wherever you are on the beach! How to get there: From SR 525 head south on Double Bluff Road until the road dead ends at the beach.

Bring water for your pups. The weather is warm and the dog drink station isn’t working. Thanks in advance for scooping your pups’ p**ps into free bags provided near the parking lot and the start of the trail.

They are paving the parking lot today and possibly Monday.

FETCH! Needs your Help!

We hope you are having a great summer and have had a chance recently to enjoy Whidbey Island’s off-leash dog parks.

As you may already know, Island County Public Works has made some changes at Double Bluff Beach Park. They have installed a separate dog entrance, a separate dog water station, and several new picnic tables. In the near future, the parking lot will be re-paved and re-striped, and a beautiful new sign will reside over the dog entrance.

However, we are currently experiencing a problem at Double Bluff and would like to enlist our members’ help. The Island County Parks Superintendent has informed us that some dog p**p is not being picked up on the beach. The p**p has been left on the beach or on the wet sand (thus, letting it mix with the water), or it is being stepped on by adults and children. The County is concerned that if the coliform count goes up when the County tests the water there, the beach may have to be closed.

You can help us to ensure that this won’t happen! Here’s how: During your visits to Double Bluff, grab some extra p**p bags as you enter the park, and pick up any stray p**p that you see as you make your way up the beach (be sure to deposit all bags in the trash cans at the park entrance). Additionally, you’ll have extras on hand to hand a bag to someone who may have forgotten to grab their own bags at the entrance.

Please feel free to copy and forward this message to anyone you think should know about it.

Thank you so much for your continued support!

Spend some time at Double Bluff Off Leash Dog Park. Bring your dogs to experience the many improvements that have been made. Island County Parks along with FETCH and the community worked together to make a separate entrance for entering the off leash area of the park. The renovations include relocating the dog wash-down and drink station. Dog bags and disposal containers are near the entrance. FETCH is working with local artists and Island County to create an entrance gate to celebrate Double Bluff Off Leash Dog Park as a destination for locals and visitors alike.
