Bella Dogs

Bella Dogs Pro reliable dog walks (no pet sitting) by experienced reward based dog trainer serving the Freehold, NJ area. Walking dogs with Danielle is her husband, Alf!
(1)

Typical Hours are: M-F 9-5pm (please inquire for off hours) Danielle is currently an assistant reward based dog trainer at Urban Dawgs in Red Bank, NJ. This is where she spends most of her nights and weekends gaining experience working with up to 42 different dogs per week (mostly puppies, they are her specialty). He attended 12 weeks of puppy training at Urban Dawgs and con

tinues to learn by Danielle talking nonstop about training! LOL! He will also be taking behavior courses with Dr. Susan Friedman as Danielle did. We currently offer walks and drop-ins M-F 9am-4:30pm. We do not do any kind of pet sitting, boarding or extended stays, BUT we have referrals so please ask! If you need help outside of our posted hours, please ask as we might be able to accommodate you although we do not guarantee it. Please note: we will not walk dogs on any kind of correction based tools. This includes shock collars, choke collars, prong collars, etc. We prefer to walk all dogs on a harness so there is no pressure applied to their neck. We use the Freedom Harness as they fit most breeds and are easy to fit and put on your dog.

Everyday is the weekend when you're a dog πŸ˜‚

We're looking at some hot temps and rain, so make sure you use common sense to stay safe!

πŸ₯΅ Keep trips outside during high heat short and in the shade (if possible). Save longer walks for early/late in the day.

πŸ₯΅ Keep yourselves and your pups hydrated and crank those fans and that AC! Putting a small amount of water in their food can help if they aren't big drinkers.

πŸ₯΅ Utilize some enrichment activities to alleviate boredom. An indoor sniffari (hiding treats all over to find) sounds like a perfect idea!

Have a great weekend!

We're only about 2 weeks into summer and so far, the weather has been pretty brutal 🫠 It seems like it's either way too hot with heavy air, it's raining... or both! Either way it affects walks for both dogs and humans alike. Dogs DO have to stretch their legs and potty mid-day, so it's super important to use common sense.

πŸ’‘ Shorten walks. For example, just go up the block instead of all of the way around.

πŸ’‘ Always have water available whether you're on the go or stationary. There are lots of portable options as well as "stay cold" bowls.

πŸ’‘ Take it slow, take frequent breaks and utilize the shade. This is a good time for a

πŸ’‘ Pools, baby pools, sprinklers or the hose can provide some relief as well as fun!

πŸ’‘ Utilize mental enrichment games or light training to keep your pups fulfilled until it's cool enough to do more physical activities.

πŸ’‘ Do your best to keep paws of off blacktop. Grass is always the best option.

Every dog is different and how much heat they can handle will vary a bit. You know your dog's best so make sure you're staying engaged and paying attention to any signs of over-heating. Whatever you do: stay safe, hydrated and as cool as you can!

What other hot weather tips do you have? Feel free to share!

The 4th is here and as we all know, plenty of dogs (and animals in general) are afraid of the sights, sounds and smells of fireworks. Besides medicine, here are a few safety tips you can easily implement:

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡² Get those food puzzles, Kongs and other work to eat toys ready to go to keep them occupied. Did you know that chewing, along with sniffing, help dogs relieve stress?

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡² Have fans, music, TV or white noise machines available to help drown out the sounds of explosions.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡² Keep windows closed and have curtains or blinds drawn to reduce the flashing of the lights. Don't have curtains, use towels or blankets to temporarily cover windows.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡² Get walks and outdoor play time in BEFORE the evening so they are fulfilled, empty and tired and don't need to go out until firework displays are over.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡² Keep your dogs securely inside!!!! Scared dogs can easily get out of collars, harnesses, backyards, etc. Leave them safely indoors! Charge GPS collar devices and make sure tags and chips are up to date in case of escape.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡² Comfort your dogs! You will not reinforce their fears by helping to soothe them. Tell them it's ok, offer pets, whatever they need!

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡² If you can, devote a room in the house to your dog that is as "firework proofed" as possible. (Have their crate, their pen, favorite toys, chewies, bed, blankets, etc. as well as and site/sound blocking devices set up for them.)

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡² If your dog needs more help, seek out a fear free behaviorist and vet to get ahead of this for next year.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡² One last tip: If you're having a party, have a designated (sober) caretaker for your dog. Use indoor gates as guests may not be as diligent about keeping doors closed. Limit entrance/exits to one main door, keep all other doors and outdoor gates securely locked. If you have the space, give your dog a good sized secure area indoors and away from guests and doors!

Be safe, have fun and have a weekend! πŸŽ†πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡²πŸŽ‡

The weather plays a big part in our job, so we pay close attention. In the upcoming days, we're going to experience some pretty hot temps coupled with high humidity... like yesterday, when simply standing outside makes you sweat πŸ₯΅

On these days you might see us shortening walks, going inside for AC breaks, hanging out under any shade we can find, sitting down and generally taking it easy. We don't do this because we're lazy, we do this to keep your dogs and ourselves safe! Unfortunately, we can't schedule all of our visits very early/late when the heat lets up, so we work with what we have.

We walk all sorts of dogs: very young, very old, healthy, sick, overweight, arthritic, brachycephalic, etc. and we take every precaution to keep them from overheating. We watch for signs like excessive panting, drooling, slowing down, laying down or sitting... and take your dog's cues.

So if you see us stopped and resting on your lawn for a minute or two, (or possibly waiting for your sprinkler to come around and splash us) this is why. We're not being lazy, nor are we trying to "disrespect" your grass (whatever that means 🫠) We're just trying to keep our furry buds as safe as possible β™₯️🐾

Special shout out to all of the people that see us and offer us water! You're awesome and we appreciate you πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ™πŸ»

Hi All, Danielle here! I recently visited my friends at Pick Your Paw Animal Rescue and met little Miss Marilyn (she's pretty petite!) 3 year old Marilyn got super lucky when PYP was able to scoop her up and save her. Her life, like many other unfortunate and innocent dogs, started out pretty ruff... but sunny days are ahead for this sweet lady.

Miss Marilyn warmed up pretty quickly and came right in with that calf lean for some pets πŸ₯° As she melts down towards your feet, you'll notice that she's also got some funny contortionist skills. She might be part pretzel πŸ˜‚

Marilyn is super food motivated which makes training a much easier go and she already knows a few cues. I spent some time teaching her one of my favorite games, "Find It", and this smart lady figured it out pretty quickly. She also LOVES to play with her ball whether it's chasing, fetching or just rolling around with it in her mouth!

Marilyn may be able to live with another dog, and the team at PYP will coordinate several greetings to make sure (yet another reason we love this rescue). She's young and loves to play, so a dog partner that can match that would probably work out best. She is currently safe in foster, but deserves a home to call hers forever.

If you're interested in meeting Marilyn, head to their website or adoption center located in the Freehold Raceway Mall (Open Fri-Sun).

Hi All, Danielle here! This weekend I had the pleasure of meeting this big hunk, Trent, at the Pick Your Paw Animal Rescue adoption center located in the lovely Freehold Raceway Mall 😍

Ok so who had a crush on the character Trent Lane from Daria ? πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ No? Ok, what about Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails ? I know I'm not the only one! πŸ˜‚ Well, there's a new Trent in town and he's stealing the hearts of everyone that meets him!

This 3 year old boy was recently rescued from an overcrowded shelter. This poor guy grew up in the shelter system since he was only 4 months old, can you believe it? The thing is, you'd never guess it because he's SO social with humans and other dogs! He's also food and toy motivated which makes teaching him new things fun and smooth.

Thanks to and their shelter partners, this fabulous boy now has the best chance to live an amazing life! He's currently in foster and thriving living with other dogs and kids, but he is on the lookout for that forever place to call home.

I know Trent is going to find that perfect family to scoop him up, could it be you?! Please contact to meet Trent!

Hi All, Danielle here! Yesterday I visited the Pick Your Paw Animal Rescue adoption center located in the Freehold Raceway Mall and had the absolute pleasure of meeting Audrey!

Miss Audrey is looking for a foster and/or forever home. Besides her sweet white eyebrows, you'd never guess that Audrey is 12 years old! She's a spry little chickadee in great shape! No senior deserves to spend their golden years homeless. Audrey was recently pulled from an overcrowded shelter and right now she's being well taken care of in boarding. However, she needs a home to call her own to live out her life in a more peaceful environment.

Audrey is a pretty chill lady that warms up super quickly to everyone and still loves going for walks and hikes!!! I had her running a bit chasing some toys and playing "Find It" which she excelled in. Did I tell you she's super food motivated? This girl LOVES car rides, the wind in her fur and arriving at the coffee shop for a puppacino. Does she sound like the right fit for you? Please contact to set up a meet and greet and I promise, you're going to fall in love 😍

Hi all, Danielle here! Today I had a break in my schedule so I went over to the Freehold Raceway Mall to meet the scrumptious Ramona who is looking for her forever home with the help of Pick Your Paw Animal Rescue I'm an absolute sucker for a pittie, but the grey ones hold an extra special place in my heart πŸ₯°

Miss Ramona is one of the friendliest, snuggliest dogs I've ever met! She'll come right up to you for some pets or treats if you've got some. Romana was recently pulled from a shelter and is believed to be about 7 years young. Although we'll never really know about her past, she's most definitely had a litter (or more) at some point. She is now spayed and up to date on all of her shots. She's also a smart babe that showed off some basics like sit, down, stay and touch and was easily lured into position for her modeling photos. I also hear she's great in the car so she might make a good road dog!

You guys, she's absolutely delicious. I cannot say enough good things about Ramona. I wish she lived closer so I could take her on weekly walks πŸ₯° ANYWAY, if you're interested in a sweet, well mannered, chill babe to hang with, Ramona is your girl.

Please contact Pick Your Paw to schedule a meet and greet! If you adopt her and live in the Freehold area, I might need to invite myself to visit her!

I have rewritten my post on off leash dog attacks, now that I have shared what happened to Splenda. I stayed quiet while we sorted it out, and also to make sure she healed properly, but had posted some of this recently when a client's dog was attacked by an off leash dog severely. I wish I could say that Splenda is the only one of my dogs who has been attacked by an off leash dog, but it has happened more times than I can count. This was the first time on my own property though. Paddington was attacked on a trail, Merlin was almost killed on a walk once, Aslan had it happen many times in public, and Andy even on our walks in the neighborhood. While some of them didn't experience physical harm like Splenda, a few of them did. And I am so grateful they had a group of safe, social dogs to come home to so it would balance out the experience. Not all dogs have that.

These kinds of events happen every day, everywhere. We hear about them, we’ve watched them, and some of us have been unfortunately on the receiving end of them. I cannot tell you how many dogs I see that are severely traumatized after events like this, as well as their people. Enough is enough. Something needs to change.

Why has our tolerance increased so much that the kinds of attacks have become normal? Why has it gotten to a point that people are genuinely scared to walk their dogs in public - and rightly so? Why are we so normalized to aggression and reactivity and these kinds of events? This is not about dogs, this is about us.

The amount of products now offered to β€œcontain” dogs in invisible ways are astounding. We value the aesthetic of the look of our homes over the overall safety of the general public and other animals. We have become comfortable and complacent with half measures and feel that we are not responsible for anyone else but ourselves. We’re in an individualistic society versus a collectivist society and have forgotten the implications on trauma inflicted on other people and dogs because we cannot see beyond "what's best for me, and best for my own dog."

We need to do better, because this cannot continue at this pace. And, to be clear, I am not upset with the dogs that do this. It isn’t their fault. I also know that it’s very rare that people who have a dog that has done this are β€œokay” with it happening. They too suffer trauma and stress and fear after something like this. But then, why does it keep happening? Why do I spend all day on the phone triaging desperate people after events like this? I am a dog trainer, but I cannot perform miracles, undo trauma, or go door to door building fences or teaching leash etiquette. I am exhausted and heartbroken.

Manage your dog. Put up a fence. Keep them on leash in parks or on trails. Muzzle train them. Do not rely on electronics or store bought containment systems that often fail or are easily moved through if the intent is strong enough. Stop making excuses, stop passively supervising, stop thinking that your dog would or could never or just because your dog is friendly the rules don’t apply. Our society and environments have changed so rapidly that our dogs have not had a chance to keep up, and we need to give them security and safety to prevent them from behavior that may end up with them paying the ultimate price, and traumatizing people and other dogs in the process. Yes, training can help, but only if you are there ready to do it and perform it properly. If you aren’t, then the dog needs to be managed and contained properly. β€œJust for a second” can quickly turn into a nightmare.

Yes, you can carry protection like spray shield, a pop up umbrella, an extra slip leash. The thing that worked to get the dog to drop Splenda was me yelling and clapping. However, that sometimes isn't enough, I'm lucky it was in my case. But, I also beg the question, why are we normalizing having to have protection on us when we want to walk our leashed dog down the street? Or on our own property? Is that the real discussion we should be having? Or should it be to address the real problem.

Please leash your dog. Please contain your dog. Please do not assume this one time will be fine. There are SO MANY cost effective physical fences now, that require no digging AND are installed in half a day. There are PLENTY of options now to take your dog to run off leash safely without putting others at risk. Do better so our dogs can be better.
