Happy Birthday, Dr. Claire Woronick!

Our patients may not know it’s your birthday, but we’re pretty sure they’d all be lining up with cards and treats if they did.

Thank you for everything you do for our team, our clients, and the pets who count on you every day. We hope you have an amazing birthday! 🥳🐾

We're back with an employee spotlight! This week: Arrington ✨

If you've ever wondered who keeps this place running smoothly while also somehow managing approximately 47 animals (staff included), the answer is Arrington. She is our practice manager and licensed veterinary technician who has been here since we opened in 2022. She's worked in GP, emergency, and critical care over the last 17 years, but the dream started way earlier tagging along to work with her stepmom, Jackie, who was a RVT in North Carolina. Basically, vet med was inevitable.

Now for the important part: the animals (staff not included)
Arrington currently has 2 labs, 4 cats that are all named after Mexican food, 2 horses, and 1 feral barn cat named Fajita who refuses to be captured and just brought over her second litter of kittens (that's one in her arms). One of her labs, Lilly, is an absolute angel who came to her after she was surrendered due to severe ma*****na toxicity at 12 weeks old that left her unresponsive and seizing for 8+ hours. Queso is a 4 year old Devon Rex who is more like a cat, dog, and a monkey rolled into one tiny animal.

Coffee with a dash of Adderall fuels her mornings, and if animals could leave a Google review they would probably say she's slightly crazy, but to be fair..we love that about her. New hires tend to think she's a scary boss until they get to know her and realize she's one of us. She said it could be the RBF but she's approachable most days😉

Her favorite part about working here? Creating a supportive environment, helping her team grow, and teaching vet tech students their large animal and avian skills that they need to complete their program at Winsome Farms, belonging to her friend Debby. Arrington loves that she gets to be a part of helping our field grow because there is currently a shortage in licensed veterinary technicians.

Her passion shows in everything she does, and we're so grateful to have her as the ring leader of our circus! 🎪

Mae visited us here at Littlepage Animal Hospital when she was 9 weeks old for frequent regurgitation. She was not gaining weight like her litter mates and seemed to be a much smaller build as well.

Barium swallow was performed. A barium swallow is when we have a patient swallow a contrast liquid that is visible on X-ray that helps identify abnormalities or blockages within the esophagus, stomach, and upper GI tract.

When we took radiographs of Mae, Dr. Baker noted what appeared to be a stricture in her esophagus and dilation in front of the heart. In puppies this age, the most likely occurrence is what we call a Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA). This happens because of a congenital anomaly where the fetal blood vessels fail to regress and create a ring that compresses and constricts the esophagus.

Surgical intervention is needed to correct this issue as soon as the pet is diagnosed, as prolonged stricture of the esophagus can cause permanent damage like mega esophagus, as well as stunted growth and decreased weight. Mae was transferred to VRCC down in Manikin-Sabot, VA to have surgery performed. She has since made a full recovery and is living her best life with her 3 golden siblings. 💛

POV: you eat one pair of mom's underwear and now suddenly everyone at work knows your business.

Good news: surgery went well, the underwear has been removed, and our patient is recovering beautifully (obviously).

Even better news: we were given full permission to share this story, mostly because the guilty party belongs to our Practice Manager, so there really was no escaping public humiliation here.

We’re so grateful for our team who jumped into action to help Magnolia! All jokes aside, moments like this can get scary fast for pet owners. If you think your pet may have eaten something they shouldn't have, give your veterinarian a call as soon as possible.

It's Veterinary Assistant Appreciation Week! 🥳 This is a good reminder that so much of what happens in a veterinary practice doesn't happen without assistants.

From handling patients with patience and skill, to keeping appointments moving, to being the steady hands and calm voices during the unpredictable moments, they're at the center of it all!

We're grateful for Teddy, Terra, Kirty, Brenna, and Courtney and everything they do everyday to keep our patients cared for and our team supported. 🩵
