Training is a lifestyle full of management and commitment. Training doesn’t end after a program or training session, it’s just the perfect head start for both you and your dog. If you’re only giving 30% do not expect your dog to give 100. Most have to be willing to make consistent changes to make the most out of their relationship with their dog.

Let’s be real for a second, Brittany and Devon are both guilty of this. Our dogs have their own jingles, alter ego’s, voices…But all of that being said if you tone back the talkies, use verbal cues your dog knows well, clear body language + pressure, and a clear marker system you’re going to have a much smoother experience and overall relationship with your dog.
Dogs primarily go off body language vs verbal; if you use too many words or constantly repeat commands it’s going to dilute and reduce value to those commands. In the dog training world we call this Charlie Brown Syndrome “Whomp, whomp, whomp, whomp…” If you do not have enough consistent structure or clarity in your day to day you’ll continue to struggle. Try saying less and you’ll see the impact.

Work your dog through the hard stuff. Challenge and encourage your dog to work through their insecurities not flee from them. Confidence comes from overcoming stress not avoiding it.

Don’t be afraid to say no for your dog. With these warmer temps + springing forward here comes the “it’s ok, they’re friendly” crew. More people and dogs are going to be out and active. No one likes to be bombarded or rushed; be your dogs voice so your dog doesn’t have to use theirs.

With the storm + extremely low temps ahead see below for a few dog safety reminders + tips.

Cut It Short Outside
See temperature guide below and use precaution.
The colder it is, the shorter your time spent outside should be.
Utilize dog gear (coats, booties, ear protection) when needed.
Train & play inside.

Paw Protection
After a walk clean your dogs paws off.
Cold can cause dryness / cracking and salt can burn paw pads.
Watch for any paw lifting when out.
Apply protective balm to avoid burns & heal paws.
Use pet-safe salt or ice melt.

Dogs at Higher Risk
Young puppies
Small dogs
Senior dogs
Dogs with short and/or thin coats

Know Your Dogs Normal Temperature
Most dogs average between 101-102.5
Hypothermia can be mild, moderate, or severe.

Beware of Toxins
Anti - freeze
Salt / Ice melt

Special Care for Seniors
Winter can aggravate conditions like arthritis, stiffness & soreness.
Keep them warm, give extra support, and be patient.
