Friends For Life Cat Rescue

Friends For Life Cat Rescue We rescue cats and kittens from difficult situations and make it possible for them to find a forever loving home. Some are with us for weeks, others for years.

Friends For Life cats are cared for in foster homes until their adoption. It is our goal to place cats as quickly as possible into a loving family. Unfortunately, because some animals are scared, stressed, older, or may not do well at open houses or in cages, they may live the rest of their lives in foster care or in a shelter environment. We believe that we have a lifelong obligation to every animal that enters our rescue and we care for each pet as if it were our own..

Tips for introducing a new cat to the family

🐾 Bringing Home a New Cat? Here's How to Introduce Them the Right Way 🐾

Introducing a new cat to your resident feline isn’t always as simple as opening the carrier and hoping for the best. A slow, thoughtful process can make all the difference between lifelong companions 🐱💛

✨ Step 1: Trade Scents
Before the cats meet, let them get used to each other’s scent. If possible, exchange blankets each cat has slept on - this step lays the foundation for a peaceful introduction.

✨ Step 2: Set Up a Separate Room
Prepare a quiet space for your new cat (like a bedroom or bathroom). Make sure it’s stocked with food, water, a litter box, toys, and comfy beds. This room should be one your resident cat has access to when it’s empty, with a small gap under the door for sniffing safely.

✨ Step 3: Feed on Opposite Sides of the Door
Place food bowls near the door to associate each other’s scent with something positive. If either cat is too stressed to eat near the door, offer high-value treats like tuna. Slow and steady wins the race here, don’t rush it if there’s hissing or growling.

✨ Step 4: Scent Swaps & Room Rotations
When both cats are calm and eating well, let them switch spaces! Keep the resident cat in the new cat’s room and allow the new kitty to explore the house. Each should experience the other's scent in all areas of the home. This step may need to be repeated several times to help them adjust.

✨ Step 5: Visual Introductions
Once they’re both relaxed, set up a visual barrier like a baby gate (or two stacked if needed) so they can see and smell each other without full access. Continue feeding and rotating them during this stage to build familiarity and trust.

✨ Step 6: Supervised Meetings
If all has gone well with no aggression, and both cats are eating and using the litter box, remove the barrier and let them meet!. Keep interactions short and supervised at first.

🚨 Important Note: Don’t leave the cats alone together until you’re fully confident in their relationship. Gradual independence is key.

Update: Adopted into a loving home 😍 Up next at the Friends For Life Speedway is the best looking Enzo we’ve seen in quite some time. This 3 year old, male, buff tabby is quite the looker. And we wish you had feel-a-vision, because boy is this boy soft.

This kitty is a hammy ham for the camera and loves all the attention he can get. Enzo has got a motor that purrs like a, well, like a kitten. You know what we mean - he purrs a lot.

Enzo has tested positive for FIV, but that doesn’t get in the way of all the love he has to give. He would do well in just about any home. He is good with kids, cats, and dogs (with proper introductions).

Visit him at the North Frederick PetSmart or contact us to schedule a private meet and greet.

We'd like to introduce you to Juniper and her kittens, Jacob and Jasmine. Momma Juniper is a baby herself at barely a year old. Jacob and Juniper are 12 weeks old and happy, playful kittens. Juniper is more timid and would need a quiet home.
They will be at our adoption event tomorrow, Saturday, June 28 from 11:30-2:30 at the North Frederick PetSmart. Come on out and meet them in purrson!

Fiyero is home from the hospital and has a lot to say about his medication regiment. While he is very glad to have the jugular catheter and nasal tube out he doesn’t enjoy his twice daily litany of medication. But we keep explaining to him that the medications are for his own good. We have to kick the effects of that virus out of his system and make sure his tummy keeps moving. He is getting supervised playtime with his siblings, but is kept apart most of the time until he is more robust and can keep up with their energy.

Fiyero has a long road ahead, but we’re cautiously optimistic that he’ll make a full recovery.

Sweet little Fiyero was dancing through life, as any growing kitten should… Beth Dayhoff needs your support for Support Fiyero's Life-Saving Treatment Journey
