🐾 Why should your dog attend a Canine Curiosity Experience? 🐾

Did you know 15- 20 minutes of sniffing is equivalent to an hours walk?

1. Stimulates Mental Engagement

A dog’s nose has up to 300 million scent receptors (compared to humans' 5-6 million), and their brain is wired to process smells. Sniffing engages their brain in a highly stimulating activity, which can tire them out more effectively than physical exercise alone.

2. Reduces Stress
Sniffing can have a calming effect on dogs, similar to how mindfulness benefits humans. Allowing a dog to sniff freely can lower their heart rate and reduce anxiety, promoting a sense of calm.

3. Supports Natural Behavior
Dogs are hardwired to explore the world through their noses. Sniffing allows them to investigate their environment, satisfy curiosity, and gather information. This fulfills an essential need and enriches their lives.

4. Improves Confidence
For nervous or fearful dogs, sniffing is grounding and helps them focus on their environment in a non-threatening way. It can build confidence by allowing them to engage with their surroundings at their own pace.

5. Facilitates Social Interactions
Dogs use scent as a primary means of communication. Sniffing tells them about other dogs, animals, and people, helping them understand social cues and feel more connected to their surroundings.

6. Physical Benefits
Sniffing slows a dog down, especially on walks. This allows them to move at a relaxed pace, which can reduce the risk of injury and promote joint health in older or less active dogs.

7. Enrichment and Fulfillment
Incorporating sniffing activities, such as sniffari walks or scent games, adds variety to their routine. This enrichment helps prevent boredom and reduces behaviors like chewing or excessive barking.

By giving your dog opportunities to sniff, you're supporting their overall well-being and strengthening your bond with them.

Arthur came out to do some puppy fitness with us. We worked on body awareness and confidence by encouraging him to put front paws, back paws and all four paws up on various sizes, shapes and heights of equipment.

This is what it is all about and this is the my mission, to be the dog's voice.

When you understand where your dog is coming from, understand, that just like us, they have needs that need to be satisfied, and you can provide opportunities for them to do this, you both can live a more fulfilled and joyful life together.

Obedience is not in my vocabulary! Training? Meh, I'm not really a fan of that word either. It's team work, it's observation, it's listening to your dog.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/fellow-creatures/202004/why-dogs-happiness-not-obedience-is-what-counts?fbclid=IwY2xjawEo1OxleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHan-k2fj1bGjpzsWtM2lFVpmsroE69HBtOJsVnY0GMcCz_yiS_cqu7ZgJw_aem_dgaNzPTpx32kY75jn7smSg

Instead of asking, “How do I get my dog to obey me?” we should ask, “Is my dog happy?” and “How can I make them happier?”

Darla tried her paw at our Intro to Canine FunFit class. She is just a youngin' so her plan was to get comfortable with the equipment, start working on some body awareness and proprioception and to have some fun with her fitness partner, Kim.

Trek visited us last night at our Intro to Canine FunFit class. He came to us already having some skills, but he and his fitness partner, Ashley, worked on refining those skills, learning some new ones and just showing off his raw talent 😁.

The dog days of summer are here! But so are thunderstorms and fireworks!

Do you have a dog that isn't a fan of either of those? This can be a great way to help them relax and divert their attention somewhere else.

You can also do some fun activities! Ruby will totally forget that it's thundering out if we are doing some indoor agility, fitness or tricks.

If you have a nervous dog, what do you do to help them cope?

Anyone else have a digger? Someone made a good point, that hole is almost big enough for a body, I better be careful she doesn't trip me and Brutus and Ruby then bury me 😂

Digging is an EXCELLENT natural behavior! I know it's not always in the right spot (your garden, right out the front door, maybe even your couch), but providing them the opportunity to dig satisfies a basic need. It brings them joy, and considering some dogs were bred to hunt underground, we can understand why.

Sometimes they are looking for food and sometimes they are burying food! Ruby, she's looking for a nice cool play to lie down (except here she's just showing off her work)!

They may dig to escape, and that might mean they are bored and are looking for some fun or they could be anxious in the space they are in.

Who here has a digger? Let's see them!
