This has been a year of loss.

Most of you know about the loss of my dad in December and my mom in February. Losing both of my parents so close together changed me in ways I’m still trying to understand. Along with my own health struggles and life’s other challenges, it has been one of the hardest years of my life.

What many people may not realize is that we’ve also lost a lot of our longtime canine clients this year.

Normally, I try to make a post when one of our beloved pups crosses the Rainbow Bridge. This year, I simply haven’t had the emotional strength to do that for each one. But please know that their passing has not gone unnoticed.

I think about them often.

I miss seeing their faces walk through the door. I miss their quirks, their personalities, and the routines we’ve shared over the years. Some of these dogs have been coming to me for most of their lives. I’ve watched puppies grow into seniors, and seniors grow old gracefully surrounded by families who loved them dearly.

When you trust us with your dog, they become part of our family too.

People often think we’re just grooming dogs, but the truth is we build relationships that last for years. We celebrate their good days, worry when they’re not feeling well, and grieve when they’re gone. Many of these dogs have spent more time with me over the years than some people I know.

So while I may not have posted about each loss individually, please know that I mourn them. I miss them. I remember them.

To every client who has lost a beloved companion this year, my heart hurts alongside yours. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of being a small part of their lives. I loved them more than you will ever know.

They were never “just dogs.”

And they will never be forgotten.

This weekend, Reba, Brooklynn, and I had an amazing time in Owensboro attending continuing education classes, watching some incredible grooming competitions, and checking out the latest tools and equipment in our industry.

One of the highlights was completing a 6-hour certification course to become Senior Pet Care Specialists. As groomers, we believe our job goes far beyond making dogs look cute. Grooming is often one of the first lines of defense when it comes to your pet’s health and well-being.

Because we spend hands-on time with your dogs on a regular basis, we’re often in a unique position to notice changes that may otherwise go unnoticed. Through ongoing education and specialized training, we learn to recognize potential warning signs such as skin issues, lumps, mobility concerns, ear problems, dental issues, and other changes that may warrant a closer look by your veterinarian.

At Lucy Lou’s, we’re committed to staying current with the latest knowledge and best practices because we know we’re not just caring for your dog’s appearance—we’re helping care for their overall quality of life.

📚🐾 Never Stop Learning 🐾📚

One thing we’ve always believed at Lucy Lou’s Dog Grooming is that there is always something new to learn.

Every year, we take time away from the shop to attend continuing education classes and stay up to date on the latest grooming techniques, safety practices, and pet care knowledge. Normally, that means a trip to Atlanta each March. Unfortunately, between the loss of my parents and my own eye issues, we weren’t able to make that trip this year.

So we’re making up for it this weekend!

While we’re still grooming on Saturday, we’ll be spending today and Sunday in Owensboro attending educational seminars and certification courses. One class we’re especially excited about is a six-hour certification program focused on the unique grooming, health, and comfort needs of our senior and geriatric clients.

As our furry friends age, their needs change, and we want to make sure we’re providing them with the safest, most comfortable experience possible.

Thank you for trusting us with your fur babies and allowing us the opportunity to continue learning and growing. We truly believe that the better educated we are, the better care we can provide.
