It can be incredibly emotionally difficult in rescue work seeing the same suffering over and over again. The pain, suffering and death I've personally seen from preventable problems is something that permanently jades you. Many times it feels like fighting an uphill battle trying to be a voice for these amazing animals.
But there are ways you can help!
Even if you yourself are not in rescue work, you can lend your support in advocacy even without spending a dime:
🟢 If you see something, say something. Some examples can include: if you're at a reptile expo and see a vendor selling animals in poor condition, TELL THE SHOW MANAGERS. Reputable shows will ban the vendor from returning, and may even get authorities involved. If you have a friend or family member who has a reptile they are not caring for properly, especially if you see that the animal is suffering, try to guide them in the right direction by sending resources on care, equipment, and rescues.
🟢 Promote curiosity by sharing educational posts about captive reptile care. Reptiles are a wealth of fascination, and you can help dispel myths and fears about them this way.
🟢 Share posts from your favorite rescues and herpetological societies. This can help spread the word on operations who can benefit from the exposure and support.
🟢 If someone you know is thinking about getting a reptile, ask them if they need help getting the proper equipment and information together.
🟢 Point people in the right direction for rescues if they're looking for a new scaly friend.
