Stop pulling your dog back. You’re making the reaction stronger.

When your dog sees another dog, the first instinct is usually to tighten the leash and pull back.

But here’s what happens:

Owner pulls.
Dog pulls harder.
Frustration builds.
The reaction gets worse.

That tension travels straight down the leash and teaches your dog to fight against the pressure instead of learning how to move through the moment calmly.

At Alpha Dog K9 Training, we teach owners how to use space, movement, leash handling, and direction changes to get the dog thinking again.

Long leash.
Clear movement.
Better timing.
Focus over force.

That’s how we help Long Island dogs build calmer leash manners around real-life distractions.

Does your dog pull harder the more you pull back?

Baker is learning that off-leash obedience starts with connection.

In this session in Long Beach, Nassau County, Baker is transitioning into off-leash walking with the leash resting on his back, not in anyone’s hand.

No prong collar.
No e-collar.
No treats.

Just real leadership, focus, and follow-through.

Nick makes a sudden turn without saying a word, and Baker follows instantly because he is paying attention to the person leading him, not the leash.

That is the goal of real obedience.

Your dog should learn to follow because they understand, not because they are being pulled.

Toy fights usually don’t start when the dogs finally explode.

They start before that.

One dog has the toy.
The other dog starts hovering.
The space gets tighter.
The tension builds.

Most owners wait until the growling, snapping, or fighting starts before they step in.

But good leadership means noticing the small signs early and controlling the space before it turns into a problem.

Don’t wait for the fight to happen.
Step in before the tension takes over.

Bear used to bolt the second the door opened.

In this session in Wantagh, Long Island, we worked on teaching him that the door is not his decision to make.

No treats.
No shock collar.
No force.

Just calm leadership, body language, and clear structure.

Instead of letting Bear rush out and take control, Nick showed how to slow the moment down, create a boundary at the door, and teach him to wait for direction.

That is how door safety starts.

Most owners pet their dog because they want to calm them down.

But if your dog is barking, lunging, jumping, panicking, or acting out, petting them in that moment can accidentally reward the behavior.

Your dog may not understand it as comfort.
They may understand it as, “Keep doing this.”

Instead, your dog needs calm leadership, clear direction, and structure in the moment.

That’s how they learn what to do instead.

This Cane Corso came out the door like a wild horse.

In this session in Valley Stream, Nassau County, we worked on stopping that chaotic rush at the door and turning it into calm, controlled movement.

No e-collar.
No prong collar.
No treats.

Just leadership, body language, and clear follow-through.

Instead of chasing, pulling, or yelling, Nick showed how to take control before the dog explodes through the doorway. Within minutes, this dog went from blasting out the door to walking calmly down the street.

That is what real structure looks like.

Benji’s first real leash walk was about learning how to follow, not being forced.

In this session with Benji, a one-year-old mini poodle from Hewlett, Nassau County, we worked on building calm leash manners from the ground up.

No e-collar.
No prong collar.
No treats.

Just light collar work, clear guidance, and calm follow-through.

Nick showed Benji’s mom how to guide him, teach him to sit, and let him walk more freely once he understood what was expected.

By the end, Benji was walking calmly and sitting on command because the leash became communication, not correction.
