And a Congrats to our Narc K9 team who is also constantly training and working hard to maintain their certifications and success on the street

Not one to be left out, K9 Isco and his handler, Officer Matt Mangano, have some good news of their own to share!

Last week, K9 Isco and Officer Matt Mangano passed their 2025 United States Police Canine Narcotics Certification! Similar to his FPD counterparts in their ATF certification, Isco was put through a challenging course that ensures he and his handler are experts in their field.

The USPCA’s ever evolving evaluation system ensures handlers and their canines are not only capable, but utilize best practices in the field of narcotics detection. Using a points system, handlers are able to learn where they can improve their craft and better serve their communities.

Congrats to our EOD K9 teams who are constantly training and working hard to maintain their certifications and success on the street

The FPD is proud to report that our three Explosive Ordinance Detection K9s, Luca, Murph, and Bergy, have all passed their 2025 ATF National Odor Recognition Test and have received their recertifications!

The National Odor Recognition Test puts K9s and their handlers through a rigorous assessment that showcases their odor detection and teamwork skills. K9 teams are expected to actively search out and identify a variety of explosive compounds, ignitable liquids, and gun powder related residue. Furthermore, this certification program gives an opportunity to handlers from across the region to come together to learn new techniques and best practices from the top teams and experts in the field of odor recognition.

We are saddened as a Unit and Department for the loss of our brother John Skinnion. John was a K9 officer for several years and then continued his dedicated service within the department. John represented the best of us and he will be greatly missed. Rest easy brother

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of recently retired Officer John Skinnion, who passed away yesterday, March 4, 2025.

John dedicated 37 years of his life to serving and protecting our community before retiring just two months ago. While every passing in our police family is difficult, this one is especially heartbreaking due to the impact he had on so many of our officers. A presence on our midnight shift for many years, John never shied away from helping our youngest officers through the early stages of their career with advice and lessons that resonate through our building today.

We extend our deepest condolences to John’s family, friends, and fellow officers during this difficult time. His dedication, service, and friendship will never be forgotten.

WE HONOR THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF SERGEANT SEAN M. GANNON

Today, April 12th, is the 6-year anniversary of K9 Sergeant Sean M. Gannon’s End of Watch.

Sergeant Gannon was one of the most caring, compassionate, intelligent, courageous, and selfless officers. He was always there to back officers up on a call, step up and share the workload of the shift, volunteer to work so an officer could have the night off, or just offer good advice, whether you asked for it or not.

What is perhaps most impressive about Sergeant Gannon, is that he did not seek any recognition for all the good deeds he did. He simply did them because he could, and because he believed it was the right thing to do. He is the very definition of what it means to lead by example, and it goes without saying that the world could use more people like Sergeant Sean M. Gannon.

The following passage was taken from a letter written by Sean’s wife, Dara, and it contains a powerful message…

“Sean has been honored by the community in so many beautiful ways. Yet, he was a private person and did not like being the center of attention. He never sought recognition for himself. He acted on his principles and led by example. That’s how he lived his life, on and off the job. He inspires me every single day. If you want to remember Sean, find your own quiet way to show someone you care. That note or text you’ve been meaning to write but keep putting off — send it. Take time to ask a friend or a colleague how he or she is doing, and really listen. Own up to a mistake and make it right. Pick up the extra shift for someone who needs the time off. Buy a coffee or pay the toll for a stranger behind you. No gesture is too small. To that person, it could make all the difference that day. We each have a special gift. Please use yours for someone else. I feel that is Sean’s legacy. Thank you for holding Sean in your hearts. Let’s keep taking care of each other.”

Honor, Respect, Remember

Excellent work by K9 Murph K9 Ofc Lewis and all of the officers on scene. A very tense, dangerous and high stress scene with a lot of innocent citizens around. This was handled extremely well by everyone on scene. Calls like this are a textbook example of the importance for the use of a K9 to make dangerous situations safer for the officers and the public.

K9 Murph was not injured and is happy as could be. Again, great job by everyone involved!

UPDATE: K9 Murph is doing just fine! 🐾 Thank you to everyone who has expressed concern. We know that people would like to bring in something for Murph but this is tricky since they are are on specialized diets and receive specialized training. If you are interested in helping out please consider donating to our K9 Venmo account: , so the handlers can get the proper food/supplies needed. Thank you!

Busy week for the K-9 unit, K9 Luca, Murph, and Bergy completed 2 separate certifications. On Wednesday all EOD teams successfully passed the ATF odor recognition certification in Salem. Also on Wednesday the K-9 unit presented to the citizens academy with a demonstration.

On Friday the Boston Police hosted an EOD k9 certification hosted by Boston PD and Cambridge PD. K9 teams were tasked with room searches, package/bag searches, and vehicle searches. All 3 EOD k9 teams successfully competed this certification as well.

Also on Friday K9 Ofc Mangano with partner Isco and K9 Ofc Lewis were dispatched to a breaking and entering to a business. After a long extensive search K9 Isco made an indication on a subject inside a closet. The male was subsequently taken into custody at this time.
