February is National Pet Dental Month! Although we believe that your pet’s oral hygiene care is important ALL YEAR long, we wanted to highlight some extra tips this month to help you keep their mouths happy and healthy:
Routine Brushing- did you know that it’s possible to brush your pet’s teeth just like we do ours? With a variety of products like pet-safe toothpastes and specially designed toothbrushes, you can make teeth brushing part of their daily routine. Ask us for tips and recommendations on how to make tooth brushing a success!
Treat Them Right- The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) does thorough testing on many oral products, including treats and chews available to pet owners. Because of this, we recommend products like Oravet, Tartar Shield and any others that have the VOHC Accepted logo on the packaging. Using specially designed oral treats and chews can help deter tartar build up and keep their teeth vitality going strong.
Oral Exams- early detection is key with addressing and preventing oral health problems. A yearly oral evaluation is recommended for your pets and can usually be done as part of their annual exam. This can help detect any early or current dental issues, like tartar build up, gingivitis or periodontal disease. If you also notice any oral issues with your pet at home, like halitosis, trouble eating, red/inflamed gums or any other issues, an oral exam with a veterinarian would be recommended!
