Like most rescues, we have a clause in our adoption contract requiring that animals be returned to us if owners can no longer or no longer wish to take care of animal they adopted from us. That’s a commitment we take seriously, though it can also be kind of sad and demoralizing… particularly when large dogs get returned as seniors.

This is Maple Syrup, a boxer who was originally adopted out back in 2019. She was returned from adoption on Tuesday. She is a friendly girl, and deserves to live out whatever time she has left in an actual home. It is extremely difficult to get senior large dogs adopted out, so if you know anyone that has an open place in their heart for her please send them our way.

Igor, who we knew as RinRin, got his obedience title today! We love updates, and we especially love updates about dogs learning important skills!

Fun fact: most owned dogs are under 25 pounds (52%) because many people think they are easier to own. But did you know that according to owner surveys less than 65% of dogs under 25 pounds are reliably housetrained (defined in the survey as no accidents in the previous two months) but more than 95% of dogs over 25 pounds are reliably housetrained? What’s even more interesting is that over 90% of dogs under 25 pounds that have an obedience title or participate in canine sporting events are reliably house trained! Thats a huge jump in the number of dogs not having accidents just from basic obedience or other non-potty related training.

Basic obedience and more advanced training has a huge impact on dogs of all sizes, and can make them more enjoyable companions in ways that you wouldn’t expect would be impacted (like house training).

On a long enough timescale, all stories have the same ending when you think about it. Some are just a lot shorter than others.

Lumi came to us with his three littermates in November 2023 after his mother died during a cesarean. We didnt know until they arrived that Lumi had a grade 3 cleft palate. Our teammate Amanda took the litter home and despite enormous challenges kept Lumi alive, though he was always about a third the size of his littermates. As 8 weeks cane and went, his littermates all found homes but still Amanda nursed Lumi along. We hoped to eventually get his palste surgically repaired but Lumi was never stable enough for that… he kept developing aspiration pneumonia despite a special drinker and foods selected for his ability to chew and swallow them without getting particles in his sinuses and airway. Last fall we were finally able to get him sedated and the true extent of his problems were revealed.

He couldn’t be intubated with a normal trach tube, his airway was so small only a urinary catheter could be used. His cleft palate couldn’t be repaied because it was only because of his open palate that he was getting enough air to keep himself alive. And as his body continued to grow and his oxygen needs increased, eventually he wouldnt even have that.

We got a surgical consult, holding out hope that maybe something could be done. “It’s an absolute mess,” said the surgeon, and that was that. The veterinarians involved said that if his airway issues had been revealed when he was still just a baby they would have recommended euthanasia before he even made it to solid food. And thats fair enough. But dogs experience joy, just as we do. They experience the thrill of a new experience, same as us. They share in the comfort of our touch and presence, the same as we do theirs. Lumi did, we know it. Amanda is a nurturer, and pulled off a miracle keeping him going this past year. We watched him taste the good things life has to offer even if it turned out that he only got the sample size.

Lumi put on his wings today. First pic is his collar tag marking his resting place. Amanda, Lumi was lucky to have you, just as we are lucky to have you.

Amanda wrote us: “I wrapped him up in his favorite blankets and put his toy with him. And when we were done saying bye and had him buried. I went back out to stand by his grave and Kayla put this on top and I started crying. She said, "he was a Hope baby, mom. No matter what...he landed in the right place."

Take a deep breath, Lumi, you can finally breathe now.

This little guy was surrendered to Fort Worth Animal Care and Control because the owner’s other dogs didn’t like him. That’s not that alarming and is actually a good reason to surrender an animal. What is alarming though is that he was hit by a car two months ago and hasn’t received any medical care for his injuries.

If this cat could talk, I'm sure she would have a remarkable story about what happened to that leg. She came to us from Fort Worth Animal Care and Control, and while we can only speculate about what happened, we certainly admire the exceptionally sunny attitude she has about whatever transpired.
