During the summer, early morning outings provide abundant shade and cooler temperatures that gives the dogs plenty of time to enjoy the space before the sun and the heat remind us how high they can reach in the afternoon.

Texas heat changes the pace, but it does not have to end the fun.

With plenty of shade, fresh drinking water, and the creek and pond to cool off in, the dogs can still enjoy time outside while taking breaks when they need them.

Keeping them comfortable in the heat is part of making sure every day stays safe, active, and enjoyable.

Healthy group time is about more than play.

Dogs also learn to read one another, share space, take breaks, and move comfortably through a group without every interaction becoming a game.

That balance between engagement and neutrality is an important part of helping dogs build confidence around others.

The next couple of weeks are really heating up, with temperatures in the 100s and several days nearing record highs.

During weather like this, even a normal walk or play session can become dangerous faster than expected. Keep outdoor activity to the cooler parts of the day, provide plenty of water and shade, and avoid hot pavement.

Watch for excessive panting, drooling, weakness, confusion, or collapse. Move your dog somewhere cool and contact a veterinarian if they show signs of overheating.

Shorter outings and frequent cooling breaks can keep summer safe and enjoyable.
