Bald, beautiful, and biologically practical ✨

You heard it here first...being bald is actually a brilliant adaptation! When feeding on carrion, a Ruppell's griffon vulture's fine-feathered head helps keep them clean and safe from bacteria, as contaminants would stick better to a densely feathered head. Their downy-covered head is far easier to clean and helps keep these scavengers healthy after consuming their meals!

Join us today, Saturday, September 5, at 3 p.m. at the Ruppell's griffon vulture habitat for a special Keeper Chat to learn about this fabulous species and the global conservation efforts surrounding them.

One month after her wing amputation surgery, Penny the ostrich continues to heal, adapt, and thrive. 💪 Her feathers are beginning to grow back, and each day she shows us just how resilient she is. We are incredibly proud of the progress she has made and grateful for the outstanding care provided by our Animal Care and Veterinary Teams.

Since sharing news of Penny’s successful surgery, and the piece of litter that she tried to ingest, we have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, encouragement, and support from our Fort Wayne Zoo community. Your kind words have meant so much to everyone who cares for Penny, and especially to the Queen of the Veldt herself! 💕

If you'd like to send Penny a special note or get-well wish during your next Zoo visit, be sure to stop by her mailbox located just left of the Zebra Research Station in African Journey. 💌📫 We would love to share your messages with her and celebrate the many people cheering her on throughout her recovery journey.

Registration for our Kids for Nature Winter Camp is NOW OPEN! 👏 With a winter wonderland waiting to be explored, campers will spend each day learning all about the habitats that animals call home whether its below the seas or in the trees. They’ll even discover hidden habitats at the Zoo during special behind-the-scenes tours! 🐠🦜 Animal encounters, engaging Zoo tours, games, and more will make this an unforgettable camp experience.

Celebrating banded mongoose birthdays with the world's most chaotic tea party 🫖

Their Zookeepers brewed a yummy selection of teas including rose of sharon, catnip, and mulberry! With dubia roaches, molasses, and fresh produce on the side, it was a tea-rrific birthday bash for the books.

Nature really said: "Give pythons a mustache that helps them detect heat." 🐍🤌

The tiny pits on a python's upper lip, otherwise known as pit organs, are highly specialized to sense heat! Giving them the ability to detect infrared radiation from warm-bodied animals, pit organs allow these reptilians to "see" heat even in the dark. Next time you visit Miki the reticulated python, be sure to compliment him on his heat-sensing mustache!

These feet may not have been made for high-fives, but they are perfectly adapted to catch and hold onto prey! 🦅 Sharp and curved like a grappling hook, a red-tailed hawk's talons give them incredible strength and aid in precision hunting. Combined with their strong leg muscles, this bird of prey is a real powerhouse! 💪
