IT'S PUMPKIN TIME!
It. Is. Fall.
The Howl-o-Walkoween is coming up.
This year we are doing virtual AND in person so if you have a scaredy bear you can help them feel comfortable in their costume right in the comfort of their own home! No need to drag them to a spooky event!
If you don't feel safe coming to an in person event, no worries! Do the virtual component!
If you have a happy-go-lucky goofball of a pet friend and you're ready to show off your costume skills join us at Salomon Farm Park on Sunday, October 10th from 11-1.
Costumes aren't your thing but you still want to help our humane education department stop animal cruelty and neglect you can collect pledges!
We don't want to brag, but if you text HOWLWALK to 41444 you can donate right on your phone! (Msg&data rates may apply.) We fancy.

You are making a difference.

Obviously, 2020 was a really hard year. Because of you, our village, we were able to adapt and continue to help more animals in our community than ever before.

Our team of staff, volunteers, fosters and donors reached so many new milestones last year, milestones we couldn’t even have dreamed of 10 years ago. As Northeast Indiana’s largest open admission animal shelter, we are contractually obligated to take in every animal brought through our doors. We can’t say we’re full. We can’t turn animals away. As our very awesome hero, The Kitten Lady once said, “a “kill” shelter is just an open admission shelter that needs our help.” We could not be where we are today without the constant support of our community. Grateful does not even begin to describe how we feel.

You all have continued to step up again and again and helped us save lives in a year that could have been disastrous. Many of the lifesaving programs we put in place last year, or that saw an increase in need, were possible because of donor dollars, fosters and volunteers.

Please take some time to watch this video to learn about how 2020 became the first year we didn’t have to put an animal to sleep for space, how we kept pets in homes where they’re already loved, and how we came together to save more lives than ever before.

We are your city shelter and we are here for you.

Do you have reservations about our organization? Ask questions. Drop ‘em in the comments (Even the hard ones. Chances are, someone else is wondering the same thing). Send a PM if you’d rather. If you have a concern, we want to hear it and have a conversation. (But be nice.)

In this episode of the Scoop we take a look back at the year that was in 2020 and how the global pandemic impacted the shelter. We also learn about the new l...

Howdy everyone!

Are you ready for some fun news about the Halloween Pet Parade?!

This year we're hosting the first ever Howl-o-Walkoween! This event is going to be a combination of the Halloween Pet Parade and the Walk for Animals!

If you are interested in doing just the walk portion of the event the registration fee is $20. The walk will still be a 1 mile loop around Franke Park starting at Pavillion 1 and includes a t-shirt.

If you are interested in doing the walk AND the costume contest, the registration fee is $25 and includes a t-shirt. There is only one fee required per entry into the costume contest so if you have parents, two kids and two dogs it is just one $25 fee.

This year, you have the ability to set up an online fundraiser. If you are able to fundraise $100 you will be automatically refunded $15 of your entry fee!

All proceeds benefit Humane Education at Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control. Money raised will allow us to continue to grow and expand programming to prevent cruelty and neglect before it starts. So far this year we have reached hundreds of children through our summer camps, reading nights, service learning hours, Animal Care Teens program, after school programs, tours, and much more.

This year we are celebrating Gracie. We received reports of her running free for a couple of days, possibly abandoned by her previous owner. Our officers along with community members from a Facebook group called Lost Dogs of Fort Wayne tried everything they could to contain her. This girl was scared and felt like she was running for her life. She didn’t recognize the strangers who were trying to help her. After a couple of days trying to gain her trust everyone involved was horrified when Gracie was struck by a train.

Amazingly, this strong girl survived. One of our animal control officers was able to bring her to safety after she ran into a local lumber yard. She was immediately rushed to Northeast Indiana Veterinary Emergency Services, or NIVES, and life saving care was initiated. She lost her arm as a result of the accident but as the adrenaline left her veins she began to trust her caregivers. Gracie girl has the sweetest personality and wins the hearts of everyone she meets. She was adopted by a loving family and she loves hanging out with all kinds of brothers and sisters, even horses!

Help us celebrate her happy ending and support the Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control humane education department as they continue to teach kindness and compassion towards animals to our community.
