Much love to for spoiling the crew with fresh greens! 🥬💚

Life gets busy, and I’m forever grateful for the people who take time out of their day to bring little goodies for the animals. These acts of kindness mean more than you know—to us and to them 🐴🐐🐢

Thank you, thank you 🙏✨

🌱 Friendly Reminder, St. Lucie County Friends! 🌧️

Beginning June 1 – September 30, the summer fertilizer ban goes into effect for St. Lucie County, Fort Pierce, and Port St. Lucie.

Why? Because during Florida’s rainy season, excess nutrients from fertilizers can wash into our waterways and become fuel for harmful algae blooms—impacting the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie River 🐟💧

🚫 During the ban:
No fertilizers containing nitrogen or phosphorus may be applied.

✅ October 1 – May 30:
Fertilizers must contain:
• At least 50% slow-release nitrogen
• 0% phosphorus (unless a soil test shows a deficiency)

🌿 Also important:
Please avoid blowing or washing grass clippings and leaves into storm drains, as organic debris also contributes excess nutrients to our waterways.

As someone deeply invested in regenerative agriculture and protecting our watershed, I’ll add this little reminder: More fertilizer does not equal healthier plants. Healthy soil, compost, mulch, proper watering, and choosing Florida-friendly/native plants can often reduce the need for fertilizers altogether 💚

Let’s do our part to protect the lagoon we all love 🦋🐢🌊

I tell you what… there’s been a handful of scary situations on this farm, but last night was up there.

I’ve never dealt with colic before. Honestly, I didn’t even know exactly what I was looking at—but I knew something was wrong.

Jazz wouldn’t eat. Totally out of character.

I went out with a carrot to check on him and immediately noticed mucus dripping from his nose, sunken temples, and him looking back at his flanks, tense and uncomfortable.

I grabbed my phone for documentation and started making calls—to a friend, my parents, anyone I trusted.

Colic. Most likely an impaction.

For my non-horse people: essentially, Jazz had a severe stomach ache that led to dehydration and constipation. In horses, this can become life-threatening very quickly if not addressed.

For Jazz, this felt especially catastrophic. Without a bowel movement, we were looking at an emergency vet situation. In a younger horse, surgery may be an option. But Jazz is 35… and the reality is, that may not have been for him.

It felt like his life was in my hands.

And then Oakley started showing signs too—which I can only attribute to this brutal heat and likely not drinking enough water.

Emily from Harry’s Hidden Acres Sanctuary walked me through colic protocol:

• Mineral oil (lots of it)
• Electrolytes
• Water
• Monitoring re**al temp
• Banamine for inflammation

Dr. Compton added:

• Maalox
• Milk of Magnesia

So we got to work.

My husband and I did walks and checks through the night—9pm, 11pm, 3am, and 7am.

By this morning, Oakley had a bowel movement and was back to her normal sassy self.

Jazz… we had our finger hovering over the emergency vet button when he finally pooped around 3pm—almost 24 hours after I first noticed symptoms.

I cannot tell you the relief.

He is one lucky old fellow to have so many people who love and care about him 🤍

We’re not fully out of the woods yet, but we’re close. For now: wet feed, electrolytes, close monitoring, and likely switching hay. Coastal may have played a role here.

Please keep a close eye on your babies in this heat. Sometimes the smallest change in behavior is the first sign something is very wrong.

And now, I’m going to rest… much like Jazz. 🤍
Keep him in your prayers 🙏

One thing no one talks about when hatching your own chicks… the phantom chirps 🐣😅

I cannot tell you how many times this week I’ve pulled over the car or searched every corner of a parking lot convinced a rogue chick somehow hitched a ride.

Nope. Just me… slowly losing my mind over one tiny cheep cheep at a time 🤣

Please tell me I’m not the only one?! 🫠🐥

Wellllll… remember that Brown Widow spider I posted finding in my daughter’s bike? 🫠🕷️

Turns out my light warning may have been a little too light 😅

A couple days later… ER bound. I had no idea she had actually been bitten! What we thought was just a weird sore turned into an abscess that needed to be lanced 😭 Thankfully, Brown Widows are less medically significant than their Black Widow cousins, and we were sent home with antibiotics.

So… friendly update from your neighborhood naturalist mom: check the outdoor toys 👀

And see? I told y’all I’m learning too 🤪 Lord knows it would be my youngest keeping me humble 😅💛

“Hey Whit, whatcha doin’… spending our savings?” 😅

“Yep 🤪”

But in all seriousness… I have a plan 💛

After a season of some really hard things, we’re choosing to lean back into joy, creativity, and building something meaningful here at the farm.

✨ Pony Glamping… coming soon ✨

A chance for families to slow down a little. To unplug. Feed ponies, brush tiny manes, sit by a campfire, explore the garden, listen to the frogs at night, and make the kind of memories kids carry with them forever.

This little farm has always been about connection—to animals, nature, and each other. Maybe this is just the next chapter 🐴🌙

Sometimes the best things grow from a little faith… and a wild idea.

Stay tuned 🫶✨
