Tonka arrived at LCDAS on 6/28 and as you can see from his intake photo his fur was patchy and he was underweight. We met him when he was moved to the adoption floor in mid July. He was shy and very cautious around humans until he felt he could trust us. Sudden movements startled him and he cowered down as thought he was going to be hit.

Now 3 weeks later and after treatment for his skin issues, medicated baths and three square meals a day he’s made a total transformation both physically and emotionally.

His body has caught up to the size of his head, his fur has filled in and he’s grown more confident with each passing day. We believe that a dog’s history doesn’t define him because we’ve seen these changes happen in countless dogs we’ve met as volunteers here at LCDAS.

Tonka is blossoming into the dog he was meant to be and we love our new big, confident, lovable boy!

UPDATE: Adopted

Mei, pronounced May is only 30lbs and is a very good girl!
She recently went home as a Weekend Warrior and is dog friendly, crate trained, and energetic. She can be a bit shy with new people and was startled by loud unfamiliar sounds. If you have a smaller playful dog Mei might just be the perfect companion.

She’s available for adoption at Lee County Domestic Animal Services. 5600 Banner Dr. Fort Myers, FL

Leela has been at LCDAS since 4/27 and she recently got a much needed break from the shelter as a Weekend Warrior.
“Her host family said she was a vibrant and loving houseguest! She played ball endlessly and she’s an excellent walking buddy. She slept quietly in her crate at night and she gets a 10 out of 10 for couch snuggling!”
Her report card also said she was good with other dogs and 🐈’s.
Thank you to her host family!

There is absolutely no reason for her to be lingering here at the shelter for the past three months. In our opinion as volunteers we have to think that her stated age of 6 is incorrect because her teeth are pearly white and she still has puppy playfulness.

There is not a more loving, joyful, exuberant dog on the adoption floor than Leela.
Live😁, Laugh🤣, Love 💕and adopt Leela!

Dino was adopted back in December but was recently owner surrendered. It was obvious that being back in the noisy, hectic kennel environment was causing him a great deal of distress.

That’s when his miracle walked through the door, met him and took him home as a Weekend Warrior. He returned today as a beloved family member and was officially adopted!
He now has humans that adore him and a doggie sister to play with.

Congratulations to Dino(now Gus) and his new family!
Thank you for adopting this special boy!

UPDATE: Adopted! (Please always keep in mind that if you witness a dog on the adoption floor that is obviously stressed, give that dog some space. Kimmi needed some time to heal from her spay, and that, combined with her being afraid, led to some people making negative comments about her. Customer service was aware and placed Kimmi behind the service counter, away from the stressful kennel floor. As she felt better, Kimmi's demeanor improved, and she was adopted.)

Kimmi’s intake photo makes her look big but in reality she’s small to medium sized. She was recently spayed and still not feeling well but we’ve found that she’s incredibly sweet and gentle.

Please consider stopping by the shelter and adopting Kimmi!

No dog on the adoption floor loves these enrichment feeders more than Tonka!
They’re called Toppl’s and we fill them with kibble, wet food, top with peanut butter and then freeze them. Some of the dogs like Tonka gently lick and caress these for up to an hour in the outdoor kennel until they are licked clean.

Stop by the shelter to meet Tonka and many more adoptable pets!

Young, energetic, goofy and with ears that could pick up satellite 📡 signals. Only one dog here at the shelter fits that description and his name is Pound Cake.

He arrived on the adoption floor with over the top puppy impulsiveness but we’ve seen big changes over the course of the past couple weeks. His occasional chaotic energy is tempered by having a toy in his mouth, his version of a doggie pacifier. He’s smart, reward motivated and we’ve come to love his comical personality!

Come meet this interesting, entertaining Pound Pup!

Remember the intake photo of a dog that appeared to be smiling from ear to ear and how it’s ingrained in your memory? Well that dog is Sable and she’s now on the adoption floor and we love her!

She arrived with some skin issues, (maybe fleas allergies?)but we now see an improvement in the condition of her coat. She’s got the most gorgeous, penetrating eyes and a very balanced demeanor.

There’s a lot of reasons to love Zoey and we just found one more thing to 💕. She’s got a little cowlick/mohawk on the top of her head that is adorable!

Zoey has now been on the adoption floor for more than a month and has yet to find a home. She’s potty trained, dog friendly, playful and quite fit for a senior girl.
