Why We Can’t Always Trim Your Dog’s Nails as Short as You’d Like (At Least Not Right Away)

We understand you want your dog’s nails to be as short as possible — it’s better for their posture, comfort, and your floors! But here’s why it sometimes takes time to get them where they need to be:

🐾 1. Dogs Have a “Quick” Inside Their Nails
The quick is a blood vessel and nerve that runs down the center of the nail. If we cut too far and hit the quick, it causes pain and bleeding — and can make dogs fearful of nail trims in the future.
• In light-colored nails, the quick is often visible.
• In dark nails, it’s hidden and requires extra caution.

🐾 2. Long Nails = Long Quick
If your dog’s nails haven’t been trimmed regularly, the quick grows out along with the nail. That means even if the nail looks long, we can’t cut past where the quick has grown — yet.

🐾 3. Gradual Trims Help Recede the Quick
With frequent trims every 1–2 weeks, we can encourage the quick to recede over time. This allows us to trim the nails shorter and shorter — safely — with each visit.

🐾 4. Safety and Comfort Come First
We always prioritize your dog’s well-being. Hurting them just to get shorter nails isn’t worth the risk — it can create long-term stress or fear around grooming.

What You Can Do to Help:
• Schedule regular nail trims (ideally every 1–2 weeks if the nails are long).
• Consider adding daily walks on pavement, which helps file the nails naturally.
• Ask us about dremeling (grinding) vs. clipping — it can help smooth the nails and get a little closer to the quick safely
