Good tips!
After Thanksgiving, many homes begin decorating for the holiday season, which can be great fun for us, but also intriguing, and sometimes dangerous, to our pets. If you choose to have a Christmas Tree in your home, consider these safety tips for dogs and keep your pet safe during the holiday season.
1.) Chewing on the limbs of live Christmas trees can cause mouth irritation from fir tree oils, leading to symptoms such as drooling and vomiting. Also, if your pet is chewing on the branches, there is a good chance they are swallowing some of the needles. When ingested, pine needles can get caught in the intestinal tract, puncturing the lining or bunching together and causing an intestinal obstruction. Both can have deadly consequences. Limit access to the Christmas tree if your dog is prone to chewing on its branches.
2.) Some trees are treated with chemical preservatives to keep them fresh longer. These chemicals leach into the water in the tree base, making the water poisonous to drink. Cover the water so your dog cannot drink it.
3.) Christmas lights should be positioned away from the very bottom of the tree unless you are sure your pet has been successfully trained not to chew on the cords. Chewing on cords can harm your dog and create fire hazards in your home.
4.) Tinsel, for all its glittery prettiness, is one of the most dangerous tree decorations you can choose. If your pet ingests even a few strands of tinsel—and pets do this more often than you might guess—they are highly likely to suffer the ill, and even deadly effects, of an intestinal obstruction.
