A new puppy owner asked me if she should get a ball machine for her 12-week-old terrier. She saw Sammie - a 10-year-old Poodle I trained - use one in a video I'd posted. I had been writing a blog post on training ball machines, so synchronicity was perfect. For most dogs, the process of using a ball machine is not easy, though many owners think their dogs will immediately take to them. When they don't, they find them more frustrating than fun and the investment goes into the closet while sometimes labeling their dogs as dumb because of the failure. But the fact is, training most dogs to use a ball machine takes plenty of time, planning, and work, including chaining behaviors.

If you have a dog who is fanatic about retrieving, he may like to learn to use a ball machine. No matter if a dog would like to use a ball machine to keep a fetch game going after his owner wears out, or if the dog only learns to use a ball machine as a trick, with most dogs, it takes extensive trai...
