Potomac Paws is an award-winning small business, providing dog walking and pet care in the Fort Hunt community, servicing clients living in the 22308 ZIP code. While we prefer to hire staff that also live in the community we serve, we also consider those living in the immediate surrounding zip codes.
We have cared for nearly 750 pets in 400 homes since 2018 and have been voted the Best of Next Door for pet care in the community each of the last 5 years.
Our small, close-knit team focuses on providing the best possible quality care and interaction with our clients. We are a professionally run company with a neighborhood feel. All team members are employees, as we do not use independent contractors to supplement our work.
1. Midday Pet Care Specialist (THIS IS NOT A SEASONAL POSITION FOR STUDENTS, BUT A PERMANENT, YEAR-ROUND POSITION)
- This position will have their shift usually between the hours of 8:30am-3pm, Monday through Friday, but core hours are 9:00am to 2:30pm. Pet care provider will travel from client house to house to provide care at the client's location. Client locations are all in close proximity in 22308. You must be available for 3+ regular hours a day Monday through Friday to be considered for a consistent schedule.
Should applicant be available, there is also pet sitting and we are especially in need of breakfast shift (6:30a-8:30a) which can provide additional hours.

It is pertinent that clients have consistency with team members arriving as scheduled and those that must travel on I-95, I-495, I-295, or more than 15 minutes to our location will not be considered due to potential problematic delays commuting to the service area. A strong preference is given to those that reside in 22308, or neighboring Alexandria, VA ZIP codes (22306, 22309).
Qualifications:
- Live in the 22308 ZIP code or surrounding area (within 15-minute drive)
- Have a love for pets and BOTH experience and confidence to handle and care for dogs
- Previous experience caring for pets (personal, professional, or both)
- Comfortability working outside in the rain, snow, and high and low temperatures
- Have a current and valid driver’s license and your own vehicle
- Savviness using technology with your own smartphone and reliable service in the area
- Trustworthy, Dependable, and Consistent in high-quality work
- Effective written and verbal communication
- Detailed oriented; able to balance common sense with attention to detail and critical thinking in unexpected scenarios
- Able to walk for extended periods of time
- Excellent skills in critical thinking, time management, attention to detail, and customer-service orientation
- Able to commit for 6+ months (1-year commitment for those wanting full-time hours to limit transitions for regular client base)
- Must be able to pass full background check
Responsibilities
- Provide exceptional pet care by walking dogs, ensuring their safety and well-being during outings.
- Utilize effective animal handling techniques to manage various dog breeds and temperaments.
- Communicate with pet owners regarding their pets' visit using app on phone.
- Maintain accurate records of walks and pet care activities.
- Manage time efficiently to accommodate multiple clients while ensuring quality service.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines while handling animals and caring for clients' homes.
