🐾 Why We Require Exams Before Dispensing Preventatives 🐾
We understand it can feel frustrating when we cannot refill or dispense heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives without an up-to-date exam — but this is not simply a clinic policy.
It is a legal requirement by the State Veterinary Board of Oklahoma.
Veterinarians are required to maintain a Valid Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) before prescribing or dispensing medications. This includes preventatives such as Bravecto, Simparica, Nexgard, Heartgard, Credelio, and Interceptor.
Without a valid VCPR, a veterinarian can face:
⚖️ State board disciplinary action
⚖️ Fines or legal penalties
⚖️ Loss of their veterinary license
These laws exist to protect pets by ensuring medications are prescribed safely and appropriately based on a current physical exam and medical history.
A current exam allows us to:
✔️ Confirm your pet’s weight and health status
✔️ Ensure the medication is still safe and appropriate
✔️ Protect your pet from preventable complications
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we follow both medical and legal standards designed to keep your pets safe and healthy. 🐾
